investing in a hps lamp

I haven't the slightest clue about these what so ever. I am growing in a 2x4x6 foot closet. Vents are an issue because i am renting the property. I will be able to provide some ventilation but nothing crazy. I am wondering if I could get away with a 250 watt or 150 watt hps lamp and am looking at suggestions for which ones to buy. I really do not want to spend more than about 75 dollars.

Bro u can veg plants simply by using CFL's in a very small area tucked out of the way..

Now when it comes to hps the general rule of thumb is 50 watts per square foot...

To make it simple bro how many square feet do you plan on using inside of UR 8 square foot closet?

alright thanks a lot. Ya I am going to be using cfl's for veg. I just wanted to have a hps to flower this time. I did alright with my last attempt with the cfl's but, my plant was male so I am starting over. I am going to grow 2 this time probably with bag seeds. Hopefully I get atleast 1 female. I have to wait until after christmas to begin it though. Thanks a lot you guys have solved my issue.

So ur growing 2 right? I have almost the exact same size space to use as u, AND i've just been doin two plants at a time. i run a somewhat cheap($150) 400w hps for flower and use the cfl's to veg as well. I've found the 400w to be more than enough for my two, well, idk.... i mean there's really no such thing as too much light imo, especially during flowering. The thing is tryin to keep the fuckin thing cool. Jw, how hot do those lil 150's get compared to a 400w?

watt is joules over time or joules per second and joules is unit of power or energy. Light energy is partly heat energy. So i am assuming that is pretty close.

Dude! Get this:

http://www.e-conolight.com/Product/EProductDetail.asp?ProductFamilyID=7&FGNumber=E-MT5H151G

Its 150HPS for $20! many people on RIU have it... including myself (check it out on my journal). I have a similar set up, and it works great... though you do have to do a little wiring to add a plug, and remove the socket to hang, but it isnt hard at all, first thing I ever wired in my life.

Though DLs right about the CFLs, I had my HPS trying to veg my plants and they weren't having it, it wasn't until I went and spent like $12 on some DAYLIGHT (NOT SOFT WHITE) CFLs that they took off, so you'll need these at well

Ya I vegged 4 ladies for 4 weeks with 12 26w CFL's a few inches from the tops. I would recommend vegging with at least 3 26w's 6500k per plant, and then switch to 2700K CFL's for side lighting and replace the main light with the 150w HPS.

LOL Thanks BXKE! I was looking for the link to your thread right now...

for veg I still kept my HPS and just added the CFLs, used the CFLs for the blue light and kept the HPS for all the lumens

OH! and, just checked the econo site/store... they upped the price to $25! Wonder if its from all the purchases from people on here.. supply/demand :)

The vapor tight pendant mount is still $20, the ceiling mount is $25

I used a sheet of metal from Home Depot that I bought for $8 in the heating and cooling section, used a 2x4 and bent it to the uniform shape I wanted.

I tried running my 250w HPS in a closet a little bigger then yours, so make sure you have at least some good ventilation going.

but idk about finding one for that cheap.

Good luck to you though.
