iPower 400 Watt?

I have 2 of the 600s and have had zero problems. I changed out the bulbs to Ushios, with the money I saved, and use the ones that shipped as backups. they sent MH bulbs too. I mounted the ballasts off the wall to help with air cooling.

Since there is a fan running in the grow room and these ballasts are air cooled with big heat sink housings, why not take advantage of that circulating air to cool them down and extend their lives? I would like to take credit for thinking of this but I saw it used at a hotel with some electronic equipment in a computer room and stole the good idea. The spacers are old TV cable bushing connectors, but you could use any sort of 1/2' to 1" tubing with drywall screws to mount the ballasts.

My 400 watt iPower ballast lasted about 6 months. Perhaps not a typical experience, but another data point to help you decide.

Any idea what caused the fail? If these devices sit in the carpet or don't have airflow I would expect them to fail. I haven't opened the cases, but there is probably some component attached to the housing and if it was missing heat sink compound or if the internal fan quit or if the intake was blocked... Anyway, heat is what kills most of these things, especially common because they are installed next to a hot danged lamp.:fire::idea::weed:

I've been running my ipower 400w mh/hps since the beginning of the year. I've had no problems, they stay cool with their built in fans never ever hot to the touch. At least not mine. I did see mixed reviews but for 130 it was worth the risk. It works great for what I use it for. Plus it came with a warranty I didn't know that until the package arrived. You just have to register it. Like I said though for 130 you can't beat it. They bulbs they came with didn't do me to bad either. I vegged 2 nice bushes under it. I upgraded to a 600w air cooled flowering tent a couple months after I bought it.
