Is it ok to use HPS during veg

I have a couple HPS fixtures that I am going to use for flower. I was curious I am using cfls for veg right now would it be beneficial to run those hps fixtures instead of the cfls or combined with them?

You can run a HPS during veg no bother, with the extra CFL's it would beneficial. What HPS you using, 400, 600W? Also bare in mind there's going to be a lot of extra heat coming from the HPS...

I have got these ballasts that I aquired for my saltwater fish tank. They run a 175 watt hps bulb or you can run a 175 metal halide lamp in them which is what I do for my saltwater tank. I have 2 brand new in the box ones.

Well Metal Halide is going to be a lot better in Veg than the HPS. Personally I would stick the MH in for veg then switch to the HPS for flowering, although 175w is quite low... How many plants you working with?

I have used MH, HPS, and CFL (High Output, not the screw in kind!). I noticed minimal difference between results IMHO. Personally I like the CFL since it creates less heat in the room, and can be closer to the plants.

My friend has 3 plants this is about his grow too. I don't grow I am just searching for my friend. His original plan was too veg under cfls and then flower under those 2 175 hps fixtures. Until he can get more money to buy a better setup. Hey how do I post pictures from an iPhone .

Those HPS/MH lights are less than 200 watts so both would be needed for even 3 or 4 plants. Your results will be disappointing.

Do you think it will be that bad I mean 350 watts of hps Should be close to 20000 lumens that's gotta be better than say people running cfls no? Could I put a couple well placed cfls under/lower down in my growing area to help a little more ?

Not that bad but not that good. That is really not good coverage since you're using 2 sources for that combined wattage. I would increase my CFL first. And I veg under 400 watt MH lights, flower under one 1000 watt HPS.

There ain't no free lunch. Growing pot? Not even cheap ones.
