well here is where im confused. you have to take cuts from a female before flowering right? so if I dont know if these are males till I switch then how an I supposed to take cuts?

You can mark the cutlings so you know what plant they came from and if that plant turns out to be male toss the cutlings that you took from that plant, also I'm pretty sure you can still take clones after plant is in flower you just have to bring them back to veg stage. I'm still new to growing and this information is just what I found on the net, either way hope it helps.

Check the top growth for the telltail double hair.
At 7wks you should be seeing something, the top tends to show earlier then old growth.

even if you wait till flower to kill the males, you will have a few days when the balls will be clearly visible and completely apparent before they pose any threat of making pollen.
