i say bugs, if it were that windy i think they'd have uniform damage, looks like a caterpillar or a big grasshopper. look at the hole in the pic. Usually wind damage will leave more "tearing damage/ragged damage" not uniform holes/missing leaves, not to mention if it were that windy, wouldn't the remains be blown away? I'd say it's bugs, the remnants are below the damage.

There could have been wind not really sure. Im going to put a 2 liter bottle over it with the bottom cut out and the top off. Does that seem like a good idea?

I agree with the soil also. Are you in an area with wild life? Mary j attracts more species then any other plant in the world. Make sure to sevin the ground around the plant to keep crawling insects at bay. And if flying insects are a problem seriously dilute the sevin and apply to plant. You want the water to look slightly cloudy. Not milky.

try a ring of diatemecous earth around it, it'll keep slugs/snail, and most crawling bugs away.
Snails and slugs can eat the ENTIRE seedling.....don't ask me how i know....

My bet is that it was a bird. Depending on where you are, if it's Spring/Early Summer, they are ripping up all sorts of plants matter for nests. The leaves left on the ground and their size, makes me wonder what kind of bug.

Hey I had the same problem with mine it must be bugs/pests I had some outside and a bunch of small spiders were casting webs and all over my girls , I washed them down then are ok now I suggest you do the same and move it to another location to prevent the same infestation from happening and what kind of dirt are you using that looks like mud in a bucket bro
