Some guy working at the grow shop, told me that a glass tube cooler for a 1000 watt HPS would actually just reduce the effectiveness of the lamp to that of a 400w.... Now I somehow get the impression he's talking shit.

How the fuck else would you cool a 1000 watter?

Your thoughts on this?

Yea that's what I was thinking....

He was like - "no don't buy a 1000 watter, it's pointless. Get two 400 watters instead, it will save you electricity too..."

That's when I was certain that he was talking shit - a 400w cannot penetrate the canopy deep enough let alone have the same lumens/m² of a 1000w.

Raaahh.. how frustrating these people can be.

It allows you to get your light a lot closer. I have an aircooled 400w and can get it with-in a few inches of the top of my plant. Closer the light, the denser the buds.

The misinformation he is exagerating is that the glass on any reflector(air cooled) does cut lumens a bit. He may be arguing that a 400 with no glass will run cooler than a 1000 with glass and not have the loss of lumens through the glass. Either way though he is dumb, a 1000w through glass is still way better than a bare bulb 400. And who runs bare bulb anyway, the 400 is going to be air cooled so you can get it close, so the lumen loss is negated anyway.

If you want more efficiency for your watts go with a 1000w vertical grow, with no glass. Since the bulb has no reflector the heat is free to just rise up and out of the canopy opposed to being reflected towards it.

But dont dwell on it. air cooled=win

Ok so I wouldn't be mistaken in saying that about two 1000w lamps, both air cooled, would be enough to veg and flower around 40 plants, without the plants "lacking" much lumens and such? Much more effective than 400 watters anyway... right?
