ahhh. del66666's 12/12 from seed thread. i have read through most of that thread and wow what an eye opener. he gets massive yeilds, but he uses coco. thats more the commercial growers choice of medium. but it works well. in fact a fella i know who grew on a large scale (3 rooms of a house dedicated, 9 x 600w lights, 18 plants per room) keeps telling me i should use coco.. im on 12/12 from seed now as i need to be a bit more energy efficient. to balance it a bit more in my favour i have just purchased a bucket load of led lightbulbs to replace my energy saver bulbs. 60w equivalent = 1.3w led. now u cant really grumble at that.

yea del really has me thinking about coco! Only thing is that I had already ordered soil before reading the thread and I have a ton of soil nutes and all that...so what I might do is either use up the soil first, or get some samples of coco nutes and try one plant out in coco. You'll have to let me know how the LEDs work out! I'll probably get around to trying them too one day...

I gotta admit I really only want LEDs to have that purple lighting. I guess it would be pretty awesome to have a 250w HPS lighting, but only using 90w and almost no heat, but purple plants?C'mon that's awesome.

i meant LEDS for my normal household bulbs. less power usage round the rest of the house will hopefully counteract the use of the HID light. and yeah i still have shit loads of soil nutes but i only spent £25 on them so no great loss. and i agree. purple light from the leds looks cool. the household bulbs i got are white though. not red and blue :(

Ah when you said you were replacing energy saver bulbs, assumed you were growing with CFLs. The electric bills is what's keeping me from HID...might go HPS one of these days, but in the mean time I'm aiming to be the queen of CFL grows :p. I might have to do some hacking and shut down Calicatt79's thread to do so though lol.

Ooooh you replaced the bulbs around the house. Yea, purple lights would be a bit too trippy to have going for normal use. I've replaced most of my bulbs with CFLs, nowhere near as efficient as your 1.3w LEDs though. Do they give a similar amount of light to CFLs/incandescent?

they have a 60w incandescent equivalent value. so same brightness as im using now but for a tiny fraction of energy usage.

Amen to that! I got all trigger happy and ordered up a 600w HID but then I started tallying up just how much it was gonna cost me each month to run it. The increase in my electric bill would surely raise some eyebrows which kinda blows the the whole 'stealth grow' concept to hell. Needless to say I cancelled the order. I'm looking at T5s and CFLs now.

Someday when I have realized the American Dream, complete with my own little house and a white picket fence and a grow room in the basement, I'll go for a HID. But while living in a condo? It just ain't gonna happen.

600w dimmable ballast currently running at 400w with a 400w bulb set me back about £20 a month, over a normal cycle this usually means about £60 for a grow
£60 is just under $100 from seed to harvest.

Think you guys and gals in the US pay more for leccy over the pond though.. but still.. it was a lot less than originally thought. So much so probably gonna run the full 600 this time around.

looks like the virus is back lolz hope you all have protection ;)

You suck! :p

Just joking.. but seriously, I'm jealous. If it were that cheap for me to run a 600w dimmed I'd be ALL OVER IT. When I tallied up how much it would cost to run a 600w in my neck of the woods I was looking at an increase of around $60 per month. There's no way the landlord wouldn't notice that. :-(

how much do you pay per kwh? just out of interest..
there are obviously other costs involved too, fans etc.. but to be honest haven't noticed much difference in quarterlies since switching over from cfl.

Actually, the cost per kwh isn't terribly bad.. it's 6.265¢ per kwh so running just the 600w HID wouldn't be awful. It's combining that cost with ventilation and the clause on base power consumption in rental units that is the kicker.

wow thats cheap electric. about 4p, mine is 13.85p per kwh
Damn. I guess I'm lucky in that department.

Anyway, the issue isn't so much the cost as it is alerting the landlord to the fact that something is up. If I lived in my own house I wouldn't mind the increase.

yeh ours is about 17p in peak, but have economy 7 which runs much cheaper throughout the night when the HID is lit..

guess you guys in US have cheaper electricity then lol.. Just like everything else..

UPDATE:

The tap roots of the Big Bud #2 reg and Ceres Skunk fem showed yesterday. Both seeds were placed in seed starting mix in 5 inch Jiffy pots. Will be posting some pics when they break through the surface.

Wow you guys pay a lot. I pay 5.25 cents per Kwh. Always thought that 11 cent average for the U.S was bs lol.
