Landrace Phenotypes?.

Hi all

Do true LR strains have sub-phenotypes...Malawi gold in particular?.

I am hoping the answer is a no, b/c if yes that means I need to clone every female as opposed to only 1.

TY in advance for any assistance.

many seed sellers selling these landrace seeds are selling just that, they come direct from whatever country
they are not selected or breed in many cases
if you get something from say ace seeds or mandala they are using landraces but creating hybrids from them, or in many cases attempting to
these should be more stable

i would suggest they will show more phenotype diversity than the majority of hybrids , you should take cuttings from all phenotypes
the last landrace i grew was afghani from seedsman, there were many poor low vigor phenotypes that i had to kill off
i was lucky to find a keeper for a while

although the landrace will not have all the diverse genes of a hybrid which could take after either parent and sisters can appear to be completely opposite plants sativa/indica
this is not likely to happen with landraces but it will still show considerable diversity between sisters

while they will all be the same type of plant for example an indica landrace afghani
they will possibly show huge diversity with vigiour yield potency flavour
many will be average or total shit, you have to work with good numbers to select good plants from landraces that have not been previously selected
or inbreed to create some stability

peace n good luck finding a winner

The beans came from Sannies shop in the Netherlands, so guessing they were leftover from some breeding project a few years back.

Hmm, this project is for my own meds...think I'll just clone everything for now and sort it out later.

Sun,
Hope you come out with a winner pheno. Have some malawi seeds from ace and wouldn't mind comparing notes with you on the best pheno yours and mine can produce. Also agree with skunkdoc that you do get different pheno's from landraces with some being garbage or not practical for indoors.

since they come from sannie i'm sure they would of been worked on in some way, i'm sure you
will be able to find out if you dig around
but still some breeders will just open pollinate these landraces as they say they are preserving the genes
rather than trying to select and create stable parent lines for other projects like you say
just be prepared to run as many as you can, and be prepared to kill off those that do not show good signs
don't waste space on the runts for too long
i killed off lots of plants at week 4 of flower for indicas they should of showed much more development
some grew slow in veg, others fine in veg, useless in flower
still you can find some nice plants, i kept the afghani i found for a few runs

I may need to re-think this one, b/c I'm already running 2 strains...and the 2 of you have convinced me LR's need even more cloning space than normal.

Damn, was hoping in just the opposite. I'm not a breeder, just looking for "that" sativa I can use for depression...and just happened to have Malawi beans sitting here for 2 years.

i have seen grows of malawi from ace seeds, and it looks very nice, its not sparse like some longer flowering haze it made
nice solid colas really good yield good potency but 14 weeks + not seen sannies version

what you could do is start lots of seeds clone them at 3 weeks or as soon as possible take 2-3 clones from each
root these clones and flower one or two of them without any veg period, keep one as a potential mother
this might be the quickest way to test each pheno while keeping the space
they take up minimal , i would assume that its quite possible Malawi even with no veg period from seed could get 4ft high lol
its a big sativa, but from rooted clones it could be kept small maybe less than 2ft and kept to a single cola
you could grow out and flower the seed plants early and chop them into a single cola, i would consider it
but i dont think most folk would be happy chopping plants down to a single branch
you could grow them all in little plastic cups, as you have 3 cuttings of each you can just keep the winner and discard the rest

food for thought

Hey guys, I have grown out both Ace Malawi and Ace GT (1/2 Malawi). IMO the best (strongest "mind-destroying) pheno is a "purple" one. I found in them in Malawi reg and GT f1s reg.

Skunk or Pepe, or anyone for that matter:

I can take a few pics if necessary, there are 4 Malawi that were flipped 10 days ago from seed.

3 are what I expected, stretching to high heaven since week 1. The 4th is a different pheno, same leaf structure only plant structure as a whole is more consistent with an indica dom.

I think all 4 are ladies, which creates an issue...space!. I played the odds and assumed 2 would be male...which would have been tossed. I have 2 other strains running whose clones were set to replace the 2 Malawi males.

So, if the Malawi has 2 distinct phenotypes, and 3 of my 4 ladies appear in structure to be the dominant pheno...then I can simply clone 1 of the 3 and toss the other 2.

Right?.:bigjoint:

Hello?....lol

I shall simplify this rather complex question. I have 2 known females thus far, both are identical in structure in all aspects.

Almost every strain I have run has between 2 and 4 distinct phenos, so I'm assuming the Malawi has only 2 due to its' LR origins.

I do not have room to clone every plant as I am currently running other strains, so basically I need to take shortcut and hope I am guessing correctly.

I think you're doing the right thing here. if I had room for only two, i would save one of each pheno. whether i was saving to breed or just wanted the smoke.;-)
i'm not familiar with sannie's malawi but the landrace has several phenotypes if not many. Ace however has worked theirs for potency and flavor so it should have fewer phenotypes

With an undertaking of any 16wk flowering sativa one should be full prepared for madness. 3x stretch and a real good possibility of swag. Both Thai and Malawi ime have been this way. Cloning should be done. Is space is an issue try taking cuts weeks into flower. I do this often, it provides a month of "stasis" as they revert to their vegetative cycle, keeping them very manageable.
African Buzz? From sannies?
All LR will show a number of different phenotypes. The African buzz I thought had been selected over multiple gens. Keep in mind you are taking clones for chemeotype, flavor as well.
Anyhow, good luck
