last summer's harvest

For the first couple of seasons of my growing the product was smoked within 3-5 months, so I never really dealt with what I consider "long term" storage. I did a lot of experimenting this past year (2016 summer outdoor / 2016-17 winter indoor) and things went well enough that we have a surplus. We've started smoking the newer stuff, and I'm noticing the older stuff (from summer of 2016) is changing color. It smells good, its moisture is good, it smokes well, but compared to the recent harvest it looks 'brown-ish'. It's been sealed in mason jars, stored in the house (at around 65º) in a dark space.

Is that color change normal for 6-7 month old pot?

If its a bad/unusual/not optimal thing, what would be the probable cause?

It's fine, smoke more lol.

I think it is trichomes degrading. I'm not 100% on this. But you could make brownies or cookies or something with it.

"trichomes degrading"... that doesn't sound good... I feel like I must be doing something wrong, so I'm wondering what part of my curing or storing I could be doing better.

No one else here besides me likes edibles, and I already have a life-time supply of those in the freezer. I'm kind of tired of making hash for this year, but I suppose I could throw a bunch of the left-overs in the freezer and next winter make it into hash.

This year I'll grow less, but eventually I'd like to learn how to store it for more than a year. That way if I ever decide to only do one big grow per year, it will hopefully smoke (nearly) the same start to finish.

Honestly I thought your description of the condition of your stored weed sounded great. I didn't mean to alarm you. I think as long as it's not molded and you like the flavor and buzz your good. I know that there is different ways to cure that will darken the weed or keep it green, but you could be splitting hairs.

I don't grow all year either, but I try not to run out or have a big surplus. It's a hell of a balancing act.

Thanks for clarifying. It was such a gradual change I might not have really noticed, except we have fresh harvests coming in and sitting in jars next to the older stuff. It really stands out when they are side by side.

I feel ya on the balancing act. Because of all that can go wrong, I tend to over-produce "just in case". As I get better at growing and experiment less and stick with what works, I can probably cut down on how much I produce. Once I started growing, I can't imagine going back to buying it, so I'd rather have too much than too little.
