LED comparable to 1000 watt hps?

Hey everyone, considering switching to LED lighting to be greener but not sure where to begin!

Right now I'm running (2) 1000 watt hps covering approx a 4x8 space n yielding an avg about 36oz.
Any suggestions to what LEDwise would be equilavent without sacraficing present yield?

watts are watts but led's say 1000w but may only be driven to 900w
i would go with smaller panels like 400-600w it would be a better foot print IMO and then like some 30w led WW floods for side lighting

and yield well from experience you get less from led but sometimes it weighs so much more super dense resin filled buds can be deceiving at first glance

If you want an answer based off of my experience, NO!!!

LEDs just don't quite have the nuts in my opinion. Yes, you can absolutely grow dank bud, but to get the same amount of photosynthesis/sugar production to match a 1000w hps, you would need a hell of a lot of watts worth of LED. Probably like 300-400.

LEDs use much less energy (like a 137 watt LED will equal a 400w hps), and they don't create as much heat so they are much easier to manage an environment with. But like I said, in my personal experience with them I just don't think they will pack as much punch as an hps, and so without one neither will the bud- not until you get it dialed in.

I think the tradeoff for the extra electricity, and extra work dealing with the heat of an hps are worth it.

if you go watt for watt i think it would be close to the same production it would just be an outrageous start up price
you could meet in the middle and supplement with warm white led's and put your 1000k on a timer and let the sidelights run full light cycle

Look into California lighting, will cost upwards of 2 grand a light but youll have a beastie led grow, the footprint isnt there but youll do just fine in your area w 2, just research man. Your wasting your time trying to get answers out of some of these goofy bastards. Look into plasma lighting, thats the best out there for artificial lighting.

Oh he went there, human recreation of plasma state matter in a light for $1200 per 300w. ITS THE SUN MENG, how much do you think the artificial sun costs anyway? IT AINT CHEAP.
 
LEDs can get expensive but what people forget is you can build your own setup from Radio Shack for dirt ass cheap if you have any basic highschool soldering skills, you can make your own circuit board with a computer laser printer and a sheet of copper.

You want to go green, well you had better have a lot of it to buy all the LED's you will need to do the job. They are better suited for small grows where heat is an issue. I use both LED and MH/HPS and you won't get the spread needed for the area mentioned unless you pack them. If you feel ecological, recycle everything you can and donate the money you would spend on the LED to the Nature Conservancy. Peace

LEDs are great on heat, great for growing but there coverage area is small so you need multiple units to cover an area effectively. I grow with LED myself and I am usually the first one to recommend them to people but for large grow rooms HID lighting is going to be much more cost effective. LEDS are best for small grow rooms. That said if up front cost is not an issue getting 6 200-300w lights would give you essentially the same coverage as you 2 1000w, possibly better yields but at least equal ,and definatly lower cooling energy and bulb replacement costs in the long run. Ive had great results with my direct fro china ebay lights, they work just as well as brand named lights but at a fraction of the price, you just need to know what to look for in a quality light and seller
 
Wow! This was not the response I expected to see! Its not as much about cost upfront as it is about return on investment over a period of time (lets say 2 or 3 years) but this only works if the yields remain somewhat consistent and if there's substantial electrical usage difference of some percentage.

Onto the next idea of solar panel system! Any thoughts or experience

Thanks Adjorr, So LED vs HPS is pretty much a watt for watt exchange when were talking necessary coverage, so were not saving necessarily on electrical bill but more so on the overall life of LED lamps and equipment? Am I reading correct?

Its more about the footprint. For example In my setup I have 2 180w units and 1 240w unit in a 2x3 tent, each of my 180w units are equal to a 400w hps but only in a small footprint directly beneath the light, my240w light is equal to a 600w hps but again only in the foot print right beneath it. 3w led units only draw 2w of power per bulb so it roughly works out to 400w of actual power draw putting out enough light to equal in theory 1400w of HID lighting, but each light has only a 2 square foot optimal coverage area where as a 1000w HID would be able to effectively cover twice the space i have. There is no absolute formula to figure out equivalnat wattage between LED and HID most numbers given are just estimates based on how well the light will perform. The real issue to consider is how much space the light needs to cover, with any LED light regardless of wttage or manufacture recommended coverage are you basicly get whats directly uinder the light and about 6 inches in each direction, that's the optimal grow area for the light. Which is why for a larger space such as yours id recommend a minimum of 6 units, essentialy 2 rows of 3 lights spaced roughly a foot apart, that would create the optimal coverage footprint in my opinion as well as providing enough light to equal 2 1000w HPS in yield which u have now. so 6x300w units would be 1800w of LED power at 1200w power draw and would be roughly equal to 3 1000w HPS lights in theory

How many girls within the space?

ive been growing soil and I run 5 plants which I try to keep under 3 feet of height. The 240w panel is brand new to my setup but ive been using the 180w panels since the beginning of this year. I don't weigh my harvests as I grow just for me and my wife but a conservative estimate would be about 2-3 oz of dry weight per plant. here is my favorite 2 pictures of plants growing in my setup, there from my first grow and since then ive sorta stoped documenting everything in photos lol. these are polar express autoflowers about 2 1/2 months into there 3 month growIMG_2185.jpgIMG_2184.jpgIMG_2171.jpgIMG_2153.jpgits also worth noting that I was using t5 flouresnts as side lighting for that particular grow adding about 80w of light to my setup, led don't have the best penetration so it can be benefical to supplement with t5's if your growing tall plants. if you can keep a nice even canopy through training or a scrog method then they wouldn't be needed. the t5's arent neccasary to grow tall plants with led just a nice bonus to the lower bud sites. edit another note worthy point is that for the first month of growth I only had the 1 180w panel and the t5's. The second 180w panel was added roughly around the time they started showing preflowers, they probably would have been bigger if I had both panels from the start, or the current 600w setup I have now
