LED Grow Lights - Discussion + Research

Hi there, was using the search engine from the forum to see if there was another thread for discussion about Led lighting and related topic, but i did not really find a centred thread, where we can discuss the various forms of LED light growing, comparisons, discussions, tutorials, electronic templates and etc etc.

I think that if we put our heads together we might come up with some good stuff that could be beneficial to us all, :community:
Maybe a couple of brains and heavy thinker could make a nice team to start developing a group project?

Did the first google now and saw some good sheetz, but expensive as :fire:

Anyways... take a look yourself:

good luck with that. most people can't let a topic go on about led lighting w/o spamming how hid lighting is better.. there have been several valid attempts but all have ended with an i can piss farther than you can piss.. instead of a civil discussion..

shame this happened before... but hey we can try again!!!
It is not about only Led light growing, but the mastering of the lightening achievements...

I am sure lighting is not only about Led Lights, but a lot more, and that's why we shall discuss

That link doesn't work SOGLAD. I just get a HTTP 404 message. I'm trying to discern if LEDs are a effective or not. They seem more efficient energywise and safer.
Sappytree, you're the first person I've read say they suck...but I am new here..
Typing LED in the search yields no results. There is a good thread on the other light types but it didn't mention LEDs. I'm researching so I can buy my stuff and grow with confidence. First attempt in twenty years of tokin.

Since the question of are LEDs good or not pops up so often I got tired of typing a reply and finally saved what I always post so I could just C&P it from Word ... so here it is ... again.

The most impressive grow thread I ever followed was a totally LED grow. Several years back, on a similar board that is now defunct, a member came into a tidy sum of money and decided to dump his HID lighting and switch to LED lighting. He researched to find the very best LED lights and he purchased a good number of different styles.

Above his plants he had two large LED panels. He built what I call portable posts for the lack of a better term, 4 X 4 posts cut in sections that would stack on top of each other, with a flat piece of plywood attached to the bottom of each portable post set for balance. (If I were making the same thing I would use PCV piping rather than 4X4's.)

Each section of stackable post was long enough to hold an LED light bar. On some portable posts he attached LED light bars to one side and on others he attached LED light bars to all four sides. He ringed his plants with portable posts with an LED on one side and once the top LED light panels were raised high enough he added more portable posts with LED light bars on all four sides between his plants. Each time the top LED lighting was raised enough for another section of portable post with more LED light bars on them he would add another section.

His plants were the thickest most lush plants I have ever seen grown indoors. The colas were massive and the buds on the lowest portions of plants were as large or larger than most I see people get just under the bottom of their colas, meaning larger than most people’s very biggest buds other than colas are.

The key to LED lighting is to purchase the highest grade LED lights available and to purchase them in sufficient numbers AND then use them in a way that they will be able to do the very most they can for the plants growing from their light.

If people did that they would throw rocks at CFLs and HID lighting and never use either ever again. In most cases people purchase low quality LEDs because of price, and purchase too few of them, again because of price, and then they tend to expect too much from them and use them incorrectly. The result is a bad rap against LED lighting when it should instead be on those who should never have spent their money on LED lighting in the first place considering how they did it.

Such a crazy debate this LED/HID topic is..

I've been very interested in LED lighting for the past few years but everywhere ya turn there's nay sayers..

For instance

I was reading the last months High Times and on page 64 of the Master Growers Guide edition theres an article that headlines "Why LED is wrong for photosynthetic processes"
Then a few pages later theres these mega adds selling top of the line LED lights ranging from $1500.00 to $2500.00..

I really dont know what to believe but would like to witness an actual LED grow 1st hand..

Thanks for all the info above, I enjoy the reads

the link worked for me. But the post is just full of "opinion" on why led's can't work. There is no controlled grow experiments in there for any type of verification of the opininions posted. you won't find what you want in that thread. The best way to find out is to try them yourselves...

I'm not trying to bash glad. I've never tried led's so I can't say whether they work or not. But I'm not one to bash led's and say they don't work just because of what you read on the internet or what you read about their "spectrum"..

NASA has had tremendous success growing various plant species, NOT CANNABIS, using only LED lighting. They not only work, but they work very well IF you purchase the highest grade LEDs available (not the cheap ones most LED growers purchase and then say LEDs suck) and IF you purchase enough LEDs and IF you know how to use them. If you do not do all of those things you will not be impressed and you will be one more person who says LEDs suck.

You Sir are likely spot on in your assesment..

Lets say 1000 people chime in on LED's
of those 1000 I would say maybe 10% have actually tried LED's
And of that 10% that tried LED's, 10% of those bought the good LED's

(just spit balling)..

I wish I could afford the good ones and give em a go...
