Led question about canopy coverage

So today I found my self in a grow shop just window shopping. And i happened to run across the nextlight mini. Damn near $600 bucks yo. I grow with cfl and i been wanting to upgrade so bad lately. Lol Anywho. I have this flyer and it says something about the footprint for the unit is 2x2 and i was wondering if that means that it can only grow plants in a 2x2 space or what? And i was also wondering if so are all leds like that in that they only have canopy coverage the same dimension as the size of the unit? Hope i asked that right. Lol thx

Oh. So basically there would b a 2x2 area that gets however many lumens and anything out side of that gets significantly less lumens?
Correct sir. It's a really small footprint for example most 1000w hps hoods do a 4x4 space with some hoods that put out and even bigger footprint. Cob lighting is cheaper and better there's multiple threads on building your own

Oh. I see. Hmmm that kinda sounds like a rip off. I'm glad I decided to consult u awesome led guys before hand. So do cobs have a better spread and where would one source the needed supplies. Can't do online, electronic stores are very limited as I live in a rural area. We have a radio shack but I doubt they would have the components needed for such a project. Would it b possible to source said components from scaveneged electronics?

You might want to just use standard 60-100w replacement led from the box stores. You will be surprised. Plus if things change, you can redeploy the bulbs.

Just as I suspected. Well it looks as tho I'm stuck with the bulbs for the time being. Hopefully not for long tho.

Don't consider it being stuck, consider it an opportunity. They are great for growing anything and to get up and going.

Learn to grow with them and then look at bigger options. 2x2 isn't much, that's 1/4 a 4x4, which as previously mentioned usually runs 1k hps.

Grab some socket and y adapters, pick up what you can afford. I would suggest getting a 3 (2700K, 3000K) warm white to 1 (4000k) day white ratio.

Best tasting basil I ever grew was under 4000k CCT philips 100w replacements.

The mini is designed for a 2x2 space. I have two that I use in a 2x4. They work great and cover the spaces they advertise perfectly. These lights are different from cobs in that the are meant to be closer to the canopy. Doesn't mean they are any worse or better, just a different type of application.

Well that's kinda what I've done. I've been growing with cfl for about 2-3 years now and i feel as if I've got everything tuned in properly in my 2x2 diy tent and i think I'm ready to upgrade now. Currently I run 4 plants at a time in my flower tent. I'm really looking to increase my yield tho. Currently I'm averaging a zip per 12-18 inch plant and I'd really love to increase that by double. That's why I'm looking for different lighting options. Cfl are great but I need something more intense. I planned on rebuilding my tent and expanding it to 4x2x2 and i just feel that cfl won't be able to cover that and give me the same or better yield that I'm looking for without adding more watts to my grow.

Oh I see. So how close to the canopy can they get? What's the heat output? And lumen output? Plz

Check my signature. they work well, but DIY is the best price point you will ever get.
Oh. So then do u think it would b possible to source said components from scavenged electronics? I saw a Christmas light build a couple years back but didn't think much of it cuz, they were Christmas tree lights. Would something like that b possible or is it Just hogwash?

Well I mean you could but if your running LEDs I would think that a 1212 from citi wouldn't be a bad option but to run it as a single string would require some high amps. But i don't see why not.

if youre already set up for CFLs with all the sockets and BS, go spend $100 on (20) 15W A19 LED bulbs to replace your CFLs. that will buy you quite a bit of time and LED prices are always falling
