I figure each fixture is supposed to be guaranteed for 50,000 hours. 1 month of 18/6 is 540hours, 2 months of 12/12 is 720. So that is roughly 1260 hours per grow for each fixture. Or like 39 uses.

I want to make one of these. Or one of the kits from Procyon.

The 50,000 hrs is the led rating. They almost never are pushed to their max rate, and can last much longer. Read the tech data at the link I posted above. It is very informative.

That is interesting. That changes my thinking a little thank you.

As far as making those lights, 10 w seems ridiculously low to me, and I would have to make about 400 of them on some kind of rack to cover the area I'm taking about. Maybe 400 is an exaggeration but it might as well be that much. Am I missing something with that crazy low wattage.

From what I have seen and read, these seem to suit the "ninja style" grows.

I could do fantastic things with the room I have downstairs in this new rental I am in..... 22 long x 12 wide x 8 high but the cost to cover that area with these LED's would probably be astronomical.

...Super interesting aspect of the industry though. I would love for these to come down more in price. This is going to change alot of shit.
You could use the light bars that commercial growers use, and not break the bank.

I know, this is what I mean. YIKES.

I am still trying to find good links for light bars. Just to see what that would add up to with bulbs and such. But the efficiency, quiet, and low heat is SOOOOOOO appealing.

As Viagro said, light bars might be the way I'd want to go.

Thank Viagro. That was pretty cool too. I just feel he would sell a lot more with a nicer fan on the top. Not a big deal, but would have helped a little. Tell him to buy cooler looking heatsinks and fans, for the aesthetic appeal.

I pointed you to Procyon because they offer kits.

But don't get hung=up on wattage until you understand more. I'm growing a spectacularly healthy plant under a 36w Kessil, at the moment.

I really like his approach, but I think it's a bit much with shipping and all. I'm tempted to try a kit, though.

edit: He'd custom build for you. and probably give you a price break considering your project.

True. I just wish is it wasn't such a leap of faith. I pretty much have my growing skills under control, I would just hate to change my methods (despite the many advantages I see) and have something back fire on me. Anything from too cool of rooms and having root problems, to having smell emit because I'm not using my usual "negative pressure" constant on exhaust method......maybe leading to mold buildup if room is not evacuated enough.

These are just things I could see going wrong if I didn't use the methods I already know work awesome for me. Even though I see huge advantages, I just don't quite yet see what steps I would have to take to ensure the changes wouldn't create other issues.

Not dispelling advice or nothing like that, it's just that this would be a huge investment, and I would at least want to achieve an equal yield to my previous HID setups. Or very close.

I will stay subscribed to this thread. Thanks for your advice so far.

Its really not as big of an investment as you think you are overthinking it a lot. One 240w Blackstar panel is more than equal to a 400w hps i would say its more like 500w. Blackstar sells panels in 300w they cover a 3x3 area I know they will do this because my 240w covers a 2x3 and its smaller than the 300. Thats a decent amount of space and they arent badly priced. Thats approximately 21 panels you would need to cover the entire space. That or i would go with a bunch of kessils. Either way thats only about 6500 bucks for that massive room you have and im sure if you were buying that many LED panels you would get some sort of discount from who you bought them from then your saving easily that much in power over the next 2 years and the LED's will last longer than that. Running that many LED panels you wont have to worry about losing any weight in final product nor will you have to worry about the heat. Take the plunge man HID is outdated IMO if i was running HID it would be CMH and not hps or mh. I personally would stay with plasma or LED now that i know what i know

ah things grow well sir my purple kush seedling i have in my desk drawer is now almost done with its second day of flower waiting to sex his ass. Although i will say i looked at him with the scope this morning i think i see pistils i could be wrong though. Its frustrating cuz i only got one timer and two sides to this desk with bunches of seedlings just starting to pop thier heads out into the world and im not sure how they are going to take the constant switching of the light cycle. Its going 12.12 right now then after i find sex on PK it will be going back to 18/6 then i will take a clone of the pk when its in health veg again. Then the pk base leaves and the clone goes to the other spot. Then the lights go back to 12.12 because the seedlings will probably be ready for it. Im working in very confined space so i need them on 12.12 as much as possible so i can see sex as early as possible and still get them back into health veg before i run out of space lol. 7/10 mystery seeds from nirvana have popped i crushed one with my hand by accident lol o_O and then theres one that has cracked but no tap root for days.... not bad germ rate for mystery seeds. The Black Berry Kush i just planted the fourth one of yesterday only took two days for 4/5 i germed to crack open. Waiting on the last one right now. Once these guys cycle through and im able to pull clones for mothers and get all the bottom halfs that are in soil out of my room and give them away i will start in on the other 5 black berry and the wonder womans.

Im going to order up some seeds after i pick up the Kessil in january. Tangerine Dream, Vanilla Kush both by barneys farm, and G13 labs Pinapple Express. These will be fem seeds this time.

Thanks for your response. I'm familiar with efficacy as it refers to visible spectrums and kelvin falling within those spectrums does not pick up PAR levels. That's what got me curious if you use Kelvin as absolute value when deciding what lamp to use for the PAR level you're after for a plant. It seems to me to an imprecise value for deciding PAR wavelengths.




The thing I worry about is power surges, given I'm using an overhead fixture with no surge protector.



Very, very little mercury. Infinitesimal compared to cfls.

Kelvin is an absolute measurement of thermodynmics. Light is radiant energy, and the spectrum of visible light is a range of wavelengths of colors measured in k temps.

Your question might be best answered in terms of luminous efficacy. This page goes into it.
