I too have a terminal degree and I've read many books. I hang out all day long with professors of economics and we discuss theory and other matters. I'm not debating your claim that welfare is a crutch - it certainly is. My argument - and one which you have not addressed - is that it's a NECESSARY crutch.

Imagine if every able body was working - every single one, as you would have it. What happens when I want to start a new business and employ people? Where do I get them from? Well, naturally I go to the job market. Oh wait, there's not one because every one has a job. So now I have to offer higher wages to get employees. Eventually, this cycle creates a massive runaway effect in wages and we're screwed. I'm telling you - there MUST be able-bodied, unemployed people in the USA. This is truth, simply put.

Dudelebowski, I personally know and have known crack heads who get money from the government thatthey then spend on crack. They get money for their kids from the governemnt also and also spend it on crack... there is nothing sadder than seeing a mom spend 150 on a rock to smoke when her own kids dont even have decent shoes.. ANd I SEE THAT! No, they dont get flash-money or whatever you said but they do get decent cash which they spend on drugs.,.. and Im not even talking just about the crack addicts, its also just lazy people who are too lazy to work who milk the system. I PERSONALLY KNOW PEOPLE like this. So, Im not imagining it. It just pisses me off when Im constantly working to pay my mortgage, taxes, etc etc etc and all these other people just get away with doing nothing. I personally know, a dude who I went to HS with, Ive known him for over 20 years.... and he makes about 3,000 a month for doing absolutely nothing. How is that fair? He is healthy. He is strong. He is smart. Why can he sit around getting baked all day watching cartoons while Im at work? And then, what REALLY pisses me off, is that the money I scrape together to pay in for taxes - goes to people like him!!!! And some years I can barely afford my taxes. Last year I had to put them on my cc. I pay over 10 grand in taxes a year easy. And, thats a very low ammount compared to some of the people who I work with. I work with people whopay over 250,000-400,000 a year in taxes. Way more than a lot of people make over 5-10 years they pay each year in just taxes... People say the rich get all these breaks, I feel its the opposite. They work their asses off, and for what, to give half of it to the government to pay for all the 60% who dont do shit! Fuck that. Are we socialists?

I work a white-collar day job where I always did extremely well. with the economy the way it is, im making about a 1/4 what I used to make which resulted in me now having a manual labor night job. I just feel that I work my ass off, and alot of people I know work their asses off...... and for what? To pay for people who dont want to do anything...

Do you mean the European socialist economies that are doing MUCH better than we are? Is that whom you refer to? Iceland's in the shitter right now, but Switzerland, Denmark, and other largely socialist countries are doing well, and have been doing well for thousands of years - much longer than us. Give them credit instead of assuming that they're an evil empire. Oh wait, it goes against your beliefs to consider other opinions, so you won't change - nevermind.

For those who do listen to reason, why assume that socialism is bad when it works for the countries that the UN considers at the top of it's index. I'm not talking about one example here - roughly 13 countries are socialist in nature and they're all higher than the US when judged by 5 objective criteria. Look it up.

Socialism works and it's a valid argument to say that it's much better than capitalism for a majority of people.

If capitalism works so well, then why the hell are all you unemployed people complaining about not having work? I thought capitalism was the economic theory favoring those who work hard. Are we to assume that you're too lazy to work? NO, it's that capitalism has FAILED us - the rich hoard all the wealth. Currently, 15% own 85% of the wealth. Did they earn it? Well, some did, but the Paris Hilton's of society certainly didn't. We have a system designed to help the rich and it finally collapsed. Trickle down doesn't work any longer - it's time to move on. I'm not trying to convince you complainers of anything however, because it's clear you won't ever grow or change.

This is a funny thread. Diggitydank Although trying to seem open-minded is being very closed-minded in this situation. Not sure if its because from Texas and what not, hahaha. Just playing. Anyways, I worked a good 1 1/2 mixing audio for a production company in the entertainment business. Everybody got laid off due to the economy/writers strike. Now I get to sit at home and collect 300$ a week from the Government.

First, you [diggitydank] are not paying any of "your" money to me to live off of. The businesses pay into uneployment as well as the government. Now I know your going to come back with well its "my" Tax money that pays for unemployment or welfare. To tell you the truth its not, and no money in this world is "Your" money. The government owns you, as with all of us. We have no money, we are merely slaves to them. Yes, they pay you your little allowence every now and then to keep you happy, but its not your money.

And how are any of you going to even come through here complaining about unemployment or welfare when the War On Drugs cost Billions and Billions of dollars while still Locking you up in Jail. Also, to the people saying " Well I work hard and Im a Patriotic hard working American and I pay all my taxes." Go work in a Sweatshop in China for 2 cents an hour making clothes and products for the USA.

There is so much ass backwards shit in this world and most of you are only covering a speck of it. You cant even argue that umployment or welfare is unfair what so ever. My fiancee and I were in a position like yours several years ago... we almost ended up camping out at the beach for a number of months, but we found ourselves inside of some dingy pay-by-the-month motel room that had heroin needles on the bathroom floor when we got there.

Oh Dont worry I feel you bro. My Fiance is Pregnant. The thing is she goes to work everyday, rides her bike to work, while 5 months pregnant and at her job they cut her hours in half. We were both frustrated as hell.She works full time 40+ and they cut her to 20 Hours, we are doing fine, but if we didnt have a place to live at on lock for cheap it would just be impossible. We do live in a Facsist state, welcome to the NEW WORLD.
