I've always allowed it to cook for at least a few weeks so the microbe populations can grow first. I like to keep it damp, let it form mycorrhizae, and turn it over every few days.

I used to do a similar mix with garden tone. No cooking and it seemed to work fine.
If it works for you is all that matters

Damn, I just paid about $63 to have three bags delivered. Anyway, I guess I'll see.

I've used it with less of a cooking time, maybe as low as 1 week? and you're right, it was never an issueI used to do a similar mix with garden tone. No cooking and it seemed to work fine.

The only time i used it i had to deal with fungus gnats.. Lots here seem to use it without problems.
If you search here for bugs in ffof you will find posts from over a decade ago.
