It depends on the size of the area he needs to cover with light. Having larger or smaller pots alone may determine if he will have adequate coverage or not.

Primary light (no natural light) coverages for the different grow light wattages are as follows.
  • 100 watt lights: 1.5FT x 1.5FT growing area
  • 150/175 watt lights: 2FT x 2FT growing area
  • 250 watt lights: 3FT x 3FT growing area
  • 400 watt lights: 5FT x 5FT growing area
  • 600 watt lights: 6FT x 6FT growing area
  • 1000 watt lights: 8FT x 8FT growing area

I know that these are the estimates people use a lot, but 10 plants under a 400w light is going to get cramped - lumens wise.

I have 10 small plants under 2 400w and it seems a bit cramped. I could raise the lights more for better coverage, but that's really just a compromise that I don't like to make. I don't like airy fluffy bud.

The cost difference from the 400w to the 1000w isn't really worth it when you consider the growth and yeild difference.

I totally agree with all of the above.

Everything in life is a tradeoff and we each need to decide if each tradeoff is worth it to us. In this case it is one of pay more and get more or pay less and get less and each individual has to decide going which way is best for them.

One person may see a value making once choice that another person will not see and will instead make the other choice. You only get what you pay for but you also have to pay for what you get.

Definitely, but this is an opinion based question. We all know that it will work, he's asking for opinions.

Mine is that I would rather not suffer my yeild if I already OWN the equipment.

The electricty cost for me between a 400w and a 1000w would be something in the neighborhood of $85.00 for the 5 weeks it would be running.

With 10 plants you might be lopping off as much as 2 oz's (possibly more) of quality bud to save $85.00....that's called stepping over dollars to save pennies.

i switched from 1000w to 400w once because of a burned out bulb and everything was fine.i had 8 plants at the time,i did lose 1 plant but I think I did that when I tryed to trim her.
