Lighting help!

I am purchasing a 400W HPS with a bat wing reflector coming with it. I can upgrade to a YieldmasterII air cooled for $58. Is the air cooled reflector needed? I ran a 150watt HPS air cooled one my first grow, but it didn't get too hot. Will I tell a difference without a aircooled hood? Soil grow, nothing else to cause heat but the light.

it depends on your grow area size and the circulation that you already have
if you are in a confined grow space or if you dont have alot air circulation I would say for sure get the air cooled hood
if you dont need it then not a problem but if you get a heat problem when you get your new light, hook up the fan to your sealed hood
and your good to go

150 watt HPS will not be half as hot as a 400 watt. And even though the 400's don't get too hot, they can build up heat which is a bad thing. And like the above said, with air cooled lighting, you can really get your plants up close to the light which works great when your flowering. Go for it! :D

Cheers.

Get it, no doubt. W/o my air cooled hood the closest i could get my light was 12-16 inches, with it 4-6 inches, makes a HUGE difference.

Thanks for the info guys. I reckon I'll spend the extra bones to get the air cooled hood then. Plus, like my wife puts it, I'll be using it again so I'll get the $200 something out of it.

yup, thats the best way to look at it. you'll end up getting many times what you put into it of bud back over the lifetime of your equipment. Its an investment, one thats pretty much a sure thing unless you fuck up and break it or something. lol
