I am a first time grower and am only trying to grow 1 or 2 plants at a time would a 400w metal halide lamp suffice? I will be growing in a small closet space

that will work fine, although a hps lamp is even better. and you will need to do something for cooling a light that size.

I ended up getting a 150w HPS but I dont really know what it plugs into as far as a lighting fixture any ideas where you can pick one up?

You can't use a hps bulb (or a halide bulb) without a ballast. If you didn't buy that as a complete unit then it won't do you any good.
You could have gotten something like this 150hps that has everything you need included except a cord:

You can use the 150hps bulb you got in that fixture (when the original wears out) and buying that whole thing is cheaper than trying to buy just a ballast alone.

A 150 ballast alone would be closer to $40-$50
