lighting question

Ok so I was using a 400w hps and the room was going into the high 90's with light on a steady 78 without. A read that smaller hps lights put out less heat, so lowes had 3 150 watt security lights on clearance for $26 each. I rigged them all to hang together and with all 3 running (450 watts) my temp never goes over 85. can any one tell me 1)how this is possible and 2) do I have more light now for the power, or less. I ask because from what I see a 150W puts out about 15000 lumens and a 400w about 55000, so my guess I am spending more for less???

I have no idea how the temps went down with more lights. Are they ballasted? and yes, you're using more watts and getting less lumens. It's all about the lumens.

they are metal security lights with built in balasts vs a 400w batwing HPS with an external balast. Also does anyone know if I can use MH bulbs in one or 2 of these to veg also?

thank you for the reply, I am wondering if I can take the HPS bulb out of the fixture and put a MH in? This is the perfect setup to have 2 MH and 1 Hps for a UVB test. But I don't know if the MH bulbs will work in the HPS fixtures (and ballasts)
