Most people myself included use 18/6 straight away.

The most common lighting schedules are

18/6
20/4
24/0

Take your pick. Some people believe that the plants grow faster under an 24/0 schedule.

I personally try to recreate nature as best i can in my environment which is why i use 18/6 to recreate summer months and 12/12 for flowering also during my flowering i try to reduce the ambient temps to around 24C at canopy level to simulate autumn/fall.

I used 24/0 on my first grow (which went incomplete, only got into 3 weeks of flower before room had to go) and have since started a new grow on 18/6 and see no difference other than I have co2 now and I see much quicker development here. Helps on light bills too.

You should have a timer.

IN the UK if we use more than 150w of equipement on a socket then we have to use something called a

HORTICULTURAL LIGHTING CONTACTOR which has a mains plug and a timer plug.

This helps to reduce the load going through the timer so that the timer doesnt malfunction.

I've used 24/0 for all my vegging with no problem. I save the timer for flower. Last grow went with the suns schedule just cuz the went outside.
