I have 3 cups with 2 plants in each just sprouting. and i have them in a shoebox covered in tinfoil with a hood with 2 100 watt cfls over them that about 3400 lumms is that good enought for now?:confused:

an the lights are about 2 inches from the leafs. is that okay?

Yeah thats fine...CFLs don't get to hot.bongsmilie

dude, do you have any pics ??? will be a lot easier if we see some pics.

anyway, in a 3 feet by 3 feet closet ( = 9 square feet) you have 3400 lumens. That means you have around 400 lumens per square feet.
You have to start thinking at at least 2000-3000 lumens per square feet.

a good rule of thumb with CFL is: The more the better. CFLs are great for vegging, and you will need more as the plant gets bigger.


I would recomend you use the CFLs with a reflector.

Here is what I used for a while, and it worked great.

that reflector looks sweet. is it a normal reflector from home depot or some shit?

I used CFL, and still use CFL for my entire grow. works good. I never tried HPS so....i can't say which one works better.

Yeah, that is just a Home Depot reflector, with a 27w CFL. I use 5 in my setup. good cheap way to start if you can't afford a decent hps system.

If you want to see how well my 2nd attempt went with just CFLs. Look up the thread "2nd Attempt" by me.
