[Long] Pre-grow planning - Contemplating my space requirements and grow cabinet

I am preparing for my small/personal grow and one of my biggest considerations at this point is my grow cabinet and space requirements, it is causing me a little confusion.

For your reference:

Possible grow locations at this point in order of preference:
  • Small purpose built cabinet under large PC desk, either in the corner section and thus almost completely hidden or at one of the ends as an end-cap of sorts
  • Slightly larger purpose built cabinet or purchased cabinet (such as office furniture cabinet of some kind like a wooden half size filing cabinet) which blends into the room
  • Wardrobe (possible issues with physical location which is why it would be a last resort)
  • Suggestions?

Space is something of an issue as I live in a 2 bed flat with my (consenting) partner, if I can confidently push forward without taking any more space than a small unit then I would rather do so. Also as my first, hopefully full term grow, I would like to experiment and learn small scale. I am interested in growing as a hobby and for general interest.

Growing experience:
  • None of any significance, I grew 5 plants to small seedlings, lost two and the last three had to go during mid vegetative stage for personal reasons (rented flat, suddenly realised the risk of being discovered during routine inspections - now in purchased property)
  • I grew them in a wardrobe specifically modified for the purpose of growing a couple of mid sized plants (3ft/4ft tall)

Expectations/desires:
  • My desire is purely to be self sufficient with a reliable and more importantly clean supply for smoking but also eating. Buying makes edibles prohibitively expensive
  • I would like to aim for about 3 to 5 ounces per crop however I think even 3 ounces is maybe a little optimistic with my experience level and space availability
  • I would like to grow no more than 3 plants, 2 would be ideal, 4 at a push. Mainly for maintenance and space reasons
  • It should be as stealthy as possible, I don't want to advertise the fact I am growing to friends/family who may be visiting. More importantly should any servicemen such as the gas man or god forbid LEO be in my flat for any reason then I would rather they were un-aware, obviously. - Note, I will be smoking in the premises and while I will be taking plenty of precautions and I wont be advertising my activity's I appreciate this could be reason for a visit from LEO should neighbours ever get a whiff and are not sympathetic to the cause, as it where. My cabinet should be able to withstand a visit short of a search warrant.
  • I would like to avoid a split cabinet (veg and flower), I would rather handle each stage on it's own.

Additional:
  • I would like to use CFL's as I am uncomfortable with the high powered lights and associated fire risk, especially in a small grow. I currently have two large CFL's (blue spectrum) and would be looking to invest in some smaller ones to compliment them and obviously red spectrum for the flowering stage.
  • I am happy using a soil medium, I think going hydro/DWC/bubble-ponic would be something to experiment with once my space requirements are less restrictive and experience is vastly increased.

Firstly, I have been browsing through some different grow journals, mainly the ones oriented towards stealth grows as these tend to be the smaller ones. My first point of confusion is on the particularly small grows, it bugs me a little that the fan leaves would eventually be pushed up against the sides and the cabinet would surely get quite cramped during the mid to late vegetative process.
Q1. Is this a problem or should small grows logically house very small plants?
I appreciate this is possibly the obvious answer but I would like to clarify this and not assume it. This is mainly aimed towards cabinets that provide fair height/width but not much depth, PC grows being an extremely small example and a small bed side table being another.

Q2. Is limited height something to be avoided if possible or does it simply require the use of SOG or LST etc
One of my possible grow locations is under a custom built PC desk (very large, used by two people with plenty of space. Think of a worktop desk about 7ft/8ft long). The square space is good at about 1m deep by 1m wide however the vertical space is only 2ft 2in which would obviously need to house the plants, a base/flooring and of course lights. Being custom built I could modify it to effectively be a cupboard at the end of the desk however if I was to add more than say 6 inches of height then that portion of the desk would no longer be of much practical use for day to day PC use and removes some of the point of utilising the PC desk in the first place. I should simply reduce the size of the desk and put a wardrobe in the space and resolve all these possible problems to begin with...

Q3. Is a wooden cabinet sufficient for a completely odourless grow (outside the cabinet), assuming good ventilation, construction and filter etc. I would assume that wood could absorb and subsequently emit an odour from it's long term occupants?

Q4.
Would anyone with any experience similar to my situation be kind enough to share some tips? Small wooden cabinet grow. What would you have done differently? What mistakes can I avoid from your experience?

Thank you for your time, sorry for the essay!

I just ran into the overcrowding issue myself. Exactly like you described, the leaves were being squished against the walls of my tent. I thought I could grow 3 plants in a 3ft wide tent but had to pull one of them out because it was just too crowded. With LST, SCROG, or other methods, you might be able to address this issue. This is my first grow so I chose not to get complicated with those techniques.

2ft 2in isn't very much to work with height wise even if you're using SCROG method. I would go with Option B:

Slightly larger purpose built cabinet or purchased cabinet (such as office furniture cabinet of some kind like a wooden half size filing cabinet) which blends into the room

A wooden cabinet should be fine. I'm not sure you can ever 100% eliminate the odor but if you do everything you can I'm sure it won't be an issue. Ventilation and filters are a must but also pick a strain that doesn't reek. (Example my Delahaze has been stanky since the first week while the others don't even really smell like typical MJ yet)

Q4. Would anyone with any experience similar to my situation be kind enough to share some tips? Small wooden cabinet grow. What would you have done differently? What mistakes can I avoid from your experience?
Be ready to deal with heat in the cabinet, especially if you end up with a cabinet on the smaller side. You'll be surprised how much even CFLs will heat it up. You may have to play with taking some bulbs out and putting some back in until you hit the right temps. You want as much light as possible while still being 75-85 degrees. Have a good ventilation plan in place and you should be ok.

Good Luck!

Thank you for taking the time to reply ottomatik. I am glad, in a sense, that you confirmed my concern about overcrowding although this is going to need allot of consideration and space is going to be the biggest factor to take into account/compromise on.

I am happy to wait a good few months before going into this, giving me plenty of time for both planning and preparation of materials.

I am very interested in the possibility of SOG/LST in the smaller options, even if it requires a fair amount of research to fully understand the theory. I guess the benefit of this being an interest rather than simply a desire for "cheap bud" means I can get over a poor crop if it means I have learnt how to do it better the next time.

To anyone with experience, is SOG a valid option for an in-experienced grower or likely to be a recipe for disaster?
