Looking for advice for 600W HPS Setup Soil Grow

The room will be approximately 2ft X 4ft with 7ft ceiling (starting out as Soil Grower). The main thing I am trying to accomplish is quickly grow enough herb to last me a year with this setup. I could probably smoke 1 to 2 Oz. per month, so say at least a pound and optimally 2 pounds is what I would like to get.

I want it to be as stealthy setup as possible and do 1 or 2 grows per year in as short a time as possible. I would only do 1 or 2 strains at a time. Things like quick finishing, hard hitters: AK47/48 or Shark Attack and C99 is always easy. And then a nice connoisseur sativa for a nice up psychedelic smoke, yet TBD.

My main questions:

1) How many plants would be good for this setup (using 4 - 6 gallon pots)?

2) Since I am new, I am assuming I would ScrOG in this setup for a level canopy with some topping once I figure all that out.

3) Vegging for approx. 4 weeks, what yield should I expect each grow, for say 4 to 6 plants? (Assume a few rookie mistakes (learning curve) to begin with, but then after a few grows, having the soilless mix, temp, pH, nutes and other factors correct.

Any advice or pointing me to other threads I could read is greatly appreciated.

Thanks:bigjoint:

it will be tough having a 600 stealthy, unless its a tube in some type of cab or something i have a 600w

and its huge, bright, and hot!

venting and moving air will be huge to a sucessful grow for you and a pound with 2x4 feet of space will be tough you have to take into consideration on how big the pots will be and also under a 600 plants will strech a lot, taking up space in return affecting your overall yeild

but your a new grower so go slow get a good system down and learn from your mistakes

organic is the best way to grow as well. Growing organically you dont have much problems with diffiencies and what not everythings in the soil!

1. IMO, 2-4. More plants=less veg time. More plants=possibility of more variety. Less plants=ease. Take it from me, my first grow involved 7 plants, 3 different strains. Pretty stressful at times to deal with problems that hit different strains, but I learned a lot more than I would have.
2. ScroG or LST are both awesome choices for your situation.
3. Could be a lb, or you could have a total crop loss. bad question.

Jonda's link is a pretty good one for setting something up. I agree with everything already posted except that soil makes it easier to avoid deficiencies. I have a waterfarm 8pack, 2 dwc buckets, and 9 soil plants. My biggest problems so far have been caused by the soil I was using(FFOF). I had pH swings out the ass that took me forever to diagnose (peat moss-based soils tend to become more acidic over time, not more neutral, so add dolomite lime if you use FFOF), and couldn't get my plants to take up nutrients for shit because of it. Hydro, IMO, is easier to control because everything is more easily and immediately monitored. But at the same time, I think you need a more solid knowledge-base to just jump into hydro because mistakes are much more costly, and you have to know what to look for more so than in soil. Spend a few days reading about setups and journals here, youll avoid some pretty simple mistakes that most of us have made for you.

cost wise ditch the 600w and get a 1000w quantum or lumetek ballast! 600 and 1000 watt bulbs cost about the same. 400w would be ideal for ur space i started in a 2x4 tent with a 400w and it stayed cool with just a 6 in exhaust fan, but the 600w needed ac. not hating on the 600w just don't like paying the same as a 1000w for bulbs. also look in to 3 gallon airpots i love em!

Here is a link to my 600w build so you can see what goes into a GOOD setup.

This room can achieve a lb a cycle no problem. J
Jondamon, thanks for the info on your setup. That is pretty close to what I am trying to do. I am definately doing a lot of research before even trying to grow.

Agent,

I did not know that 1000w bulbs were similar price to 600w stuff, but 600w is more than I will need. I was thinking 400w originally, but I have read many posts where people say they regretted the 400 and wished they had gotten the 600, it is a good balance and makes more sense for what I am trying to do, esp. from an energy consumption.

I am definitely researching the Air Pots, there seems to be a lot of hype for them. I was just thinking normal 4 to 6 gallon pots to try to get the most out of the plants, you think 3 gallon Air Pots are big enough for a full growout?

Mike91,

Thanks for the info on your experiences. I was thinking that limiting to 1 or 2 strains and 4 to 6 plants would be easier to manage. FFOF is definitely the soil I see most recommended, but if I can find a good nursery, my plan is to get all the stuff I can find for Subcool's Super Soil. Thanks for the tip on the lime. I should be able to get that and worm castings. The guano and other stuff will probably hard for me to find, but I am going to do the best I can.

Thanks again for all the info, any more ideas on soil/pot stuff would be appreciated, as that is what I am accumulating atm.

I switched to happy frog when my hydro store didnt have bigger bags of ocean forest. Ill never go back. Its all prefernce though tbh, and getting a feel for whatever youre using. With 2 plants, go 5 gal pots. More plants, maybe smaller

How much are you usually trying to pull from each plant?
those were my mothers, but under a 400w with 6 91 chem x bubbleberry with 4 week veg. in 3 gallon airpots using General Organics and bloombastic I pulled about 2 ounces per +/-
