Im looking for a new Led light to grow my plants through their whole life.. I was looking at either the 240w blackstar(flower) or the ProGrow 180. I am going to be using a GL60 tent which is 2x2x5feet and only will be growing and flower 2 short auto's at a time and would be hoping for no more than an oz of each plant(if possible lol). which would you suggest? Also, If you know a better led for around $300.. let me know:) Im just having a hard time deciding and its starting to annoy me haha...thanks for the help peeps...good day:leaf:

In your space with 1-2 plants, you really cant go wrong with either the Blackstar240 or the Pro-Grow180 LED panel... I recommend either one. I personally use Blackstar240s. It is entirely possible to yield more than an ounce/plant with either of these lights.

Blackstar240s are $280 instead of $320 for the Pro-Grow180 if you feel like saving $40

The blackstar and progrows are two of the best and well reviewed leds in your price range. Either should do a nice job for you.

Thanks alot for the answers guys, but I was wondering if the Blackstar 240 and the ProGrow 180 are the same quality, Like is the ProGrow really worth the extra $40? or is it just for the choice of which spectrum you want to use?

it's a toss up. buy both, run a comparison grow, and let us know which you like better and why! ;) I have no actual experience growing with the Pro-Grow180 so I will be quiet now.

I use HGL, partly for the 10% green, but mostly for the 60 degree lens angle.

But I don't see them in the running, costing $5 per watt like they do.
I had a problem with mine the first week, they allowed me to dig in and swap harnesses around until I found the defective parts. New parts came in this morning, all without me having to ship anything anywhere. Two assemblies out of a 4x4 square (16 total), I kept using the other 14 until the new ones arrived, plants had light throughout the problem time.
To me that kind of service is worth a few extra dollars, down time would have been out of my pocket.

Two lens inop.jpg The far two center's are out, this picture was all the warranty info HGL Technologies required from me.

I supplement my Blackstar spectrum with 2 of these CFLs (2700K), and I have had good results doing so... With the extra $40, you could add a couple of these (you can snag them at Home Depot) and even have some change to spare ;) Of course, you could do all sorts of other things with the extra $40 too, but most of all HAVE FUN...

Good luck to you, and Happy Growing! =D

According to a study done by the California Department of Transportation, L.E.D. lights are not efficient; i.e. they do not put out near as much light (kumens) as they advertise. Basically , the CaliTrans study determined that LED companies are false advertising - the study detemined the measured illuminance of LED lights from all major manufactures to be around 40% of what was advertised. The same study determined that for tubular flourescents (1) the illimination claims in their advertising was truthful, and (2) tubular fourescents are the most cost effective means for large scale indoor lighting (of CaliTrans office space).

Home Depot Cheapo double 40 watt shop lights grow dense vegetation. I have 400w HID for flowering, but I still keep the flouros on until the heat build up becomes a prob.

Don't forget you also receieve a three year warranty(progrow) versus 1 year (blackstar) for that extra 40 bucks.....plus progrow runs cooler than the blackstar(old ver.) due to a better heatsink IMO....

Yeah, my HGL's were advertised at 1200 umol at 12", I get 1025.
Still better than the 950 umol at 12" I ran with the HID.

The penetration is exactly as adverised, at 48" I get 650 umol, the HID setup gave me 300 umol at 48". That is a major improvement for the lower buds, and indeed, they are growing much faster than previous.

The watts per square foot went from 133w/foot2 with HID to 137w/foot2 with the HGL's, this is a good comparison.

My quantum meter quits reading at 660 nm and misses all the far red and usable infrared, so it us definitely under reading. I don't have $4000 for a better meter. But I use the same meter for all the lights, the relative values are good.

24 inch, PAR.jpg This is at 24"
24 inch, blue.jpg24 inch, red.jpg The outputs are listed for the LED, this was more of a test on the meters. It looks as if the 515 nm green is registering on the blue meter.

Ha you must be applying sunscreen in that room with all that UV, especially all that time you spend in there measuring umol readings....;-)

I'm happy that you got what you wanted from those leds.....
I just wont buy them due to cammie........But we wont start that up again..

be safe and happy growing..

Yeah OK but didn't you just get a pro-grow 180, end up hating it due to the noise level, and return it? and now you are looking elsewhere?

Yes I did return it....And I am looking elsewhere for a quieter panel....ha
But this is a choice between blackstar vs progrow?---same little shitty fans on both...
Some people aren't as picky as me about sound level in their grow room....i am because all i ever used was fluoros/hid....dead silent
Fuck I even have a speed controller on my inlines to reduce noise and use airkings for oscillation due to their low noise/vibration qualities......not everyone is a sound/quality freak like me...:-P

yeah thats cool man... I guess maybe both blackstars and pro-grows ship with shitty loud fans... There is a thread on here somewhere where the guy took apart his blackstar and replaced the crappy fans with better ones... he posted pictures and step by step instruction... /shrug

Hey PrezDickie these new chrome blackstars look just like the Feros:

Hopefully they (blackstar - Gotham Hydro) will remain the best bang-for-buck in LED, and sell them cheaper!

Its because the Fero/apollo/blackstar chrome/htg agromax pro are built by the same factory......ha
Yeah the chrome probably will be the cheapest.... has one less switch on the panel(to swich off 1/2 the clusters)......saved them 5 dollars on the build(lol)...
