Lots of advice from people - how good is it?

Hey all,

I am in the middle of my first indoor grow, and am getting a lot of advice from people I know and I just wanted to try and sort it all out before I went ahead and made some drastic changes to my regime. I know you folks can set my compass straight.

1. Had 10 plants under one 1000w MH. They are all in 3 gallon smart pots, and I just started flowering them, around 18 inches tall, about 4 days ago. The advice given to me was this - Pick 5 that I want to keep, toss the rest, and transplant them in to either 7 or 10 gallon pots for the remainder of their stay.

2. For transplanting, the same person suggested cutting the smart pots on four sides to minimize transplant shock - how bad would it be to just set the 3 gallon pot inside of the larger pot? Not that I am going to do that, I am just curious.

I'll just leave it at that for now. Thanks folks. You guys definitely know your grow.

Advice is worth what you pay for it, including the advice you get here.

I also start more plants than I intend to finish and cull them at some point. If yours were started from regular seeds, have you already culled the males and have 10 females?

I dont see a prob of putting the smart pot directly into the bucket. The roots grow out of the smart pot as it is, and will keep on growing if it has some medium to grow in.

First of all everyone grows a little different. I suggest you determine what works for you and stick with it. That said there are some basic principles you must adhere to. In regards tothe advice yougot in culling and changing pots.I ama firm believer that your pot size is determined by several different factors including veg time and strain. Youwould always be safe with a 5 gallon pot I do not know why you would need 10 gallons seems tome to be a waste of soil. I personally use three gallon pots but I only veg for 30 - 49 days and I have strains that don't seem to have large root mass (which works for me). I too cull when necessary primarily to make sure each plant gets sufficient light. Sure do have a hard time killing the little things though. MH to HPS is accurate!

I wouldn't say you need 7-10 gallon pots. 5 Gallon will be just fine. You can transplant the smart pot or just the plant. At that size you will be squeezing them under the 1000w lights (5'x5' footprint at 18" from the glass of your hood) but why not. If you rotate your plants around avery other day and maybe hang a CFL or 2 then you should be fine. Why kill a plants that's going to give you weed?

and everyone here is amazed when someone can hit over a pound per 1000w. it because we use bigger pots and our root mass is way larger than yours. a plant vegged for 2 months in a 10 gal pot flowered with a 600w will yield more than a plant flowered with a 1000w that only been vegged for 4 weeks. i personally know people and have seen their grows that hit 30oz per 600w lamp. more root more fruit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- the problem with advise on rollitup is that most of it comes from people who will never graduate beyond an 85f closet grow using pantyhose filters and cfl bulbs for side lighting. they refuse to spend the money to do things properly and try to nig-rig everything to save a few pennies but what they really do is doom themselves to a never ending series of problems because they think hydro stores are evil, helicopters are flying around everywhere trying to sniff out their 400w lamp and that anyone who tells them they're wrong is an asshole. seriously go get jorge cervante's grow bible, ed green's grow bible or ed rosenthal's grow bible and you will never ask this site another question again.

You again! Nobody denies that with larger pots, greater root mass and longer veg yields go up significantly. I have a space issue so I cannot veg as long. This is my cycle and it works for me with damn good results. You obviously have some knowledge but TACT is something you could work on. Over the last couple days your posts have consisted primarily of attacks on others using the forum. OK with me I can handle . I'm sure based on your past posts your response here will be condescending in someway. Oh, by the way I have Cervante's grow bible. Why are you even on the site if your two bibles tell you everything you need to know?

LOL. Good shit and true. Advice is only worth what you paid for it.

The advice your buddy gave you about switching to 10's was because that is his preferred method. Is there any difference between flowering 2 5 gallon plants and 1 10 gallon plant? Not as long as they were vegged to max capacity in their given container size. It's not the size of the container, it's the amount of roots in the container that can feed the plant that will get you bigger yields. Now, if your plant was vegged beyond a couple months in a 5 gallon than it would probably make sense to move to a 10 gallon for flowering. However, my buddies love doing 10 gals (and larger) because there are less total plants to take care of, therefore less watering as the container can hold double the water. Really, it's all about your personal preference and what works for you. I use 5 gals because they are easy to move/rotate/carry especially with the sewn-on handles! They fill up a TON of the space inside a flood tray using smart pots. Moreso than a 10 gallon could due to it's circumference, so ultimately I'm getting more soil room out of the same floor space. The only downside is there are definitely more plants needed with smaller containers.

How long did you veg in the 5 gals for and/or how long do you plan on veg'ing for? That's really the determining factor is how long you plan to veg in the 5 gallon.

dont get me wrong im not saying "EVERYONE SHOULD BE IN TEN GALLON POTS OR YOUR MORONS!!!" i was simply countering swisher's comment that anything above 5 gallons is wasted. i just want to make it clear that that is not so. i realize people's spaces are different and yes your right two 5 gal plants will, for the most part, equal what a single 10 gal plant would produce. however if you could take those same two plants and put them in 10 gal pots with sufficient lighting during veg (NOT CFL"S) you would have larger yielding plants than had they been left in the 5 gal. how to we fill such a large container with roots? we accomplish it with beneficial bacteria and fungi i.e. Great White, Sub-Culture B&M, Roots Excelurator, Oregonism and on and on. Saying anything above 5 gal is wasted is misinformation and that is what i'm on a mission to correct on rollitup. i want people to succeed. i want people to grow to the best of their abilities but an extreme close mindedness has engulfed this forum. its like incest, all its information comes from within itself with hardly any injection of knowledge from anyone outside the forum community. in turn we get misinformation, bad grow rooms, nig-rigged setups and people blowing hard earned money on the advise of people who have never and may never actually produce the kind of bud you would want to buy if it was you looking for a bag. swisher consider it tough love.

First of all I didn't say anything above 5 gallons would be wasted (I said seemed) depending on your/his circumstances. I said based on what the original post says and his apparent skill level 5 gallons would be sufficient. He doesn't seem to be using the products you describe to increase root mass so chances are at 5 gallons they would not become root bound. I appreciate the fact your knowledgeable and know what it takes to increase root mass. I DON"T BELIEVE I"VE GIVEN MISINFORMATION! I have alot to learn and know it but I always try and avoid giving people incorrect info. Sounds like you on some crusade to educate everyone on this site with your unending knowledge. Just for your info here are plenty of people on this site that have as much or more experience than you. Think about it. I think it is admirable you want to educate and help people but there is no one right way to grow. Believe me my final product is in great demand but I would never say it could not be improved because there are always ways to make it better. That's why I am on this site. Oh yes I want people to succeed including you. Peace Out!.

The racial stereotyped version of Jury-Rigged, aka put together with stuff you have on hand, or in a fashion that wouldn't be accepted as "professional".
Exactly right! In this case it is his way of saying you don't know what the hell your doing and cut corners all based on advice they got from others on this site.

Let me start this verbal assault by saying you are a fucking idiot. I feel the use of such harsh language is warranted because of your use of a racist statement. That alone shows just how stupid you are so I have decided to forgo the big words and speak to you in a manner that your fourth grade education allows you to understand you red neck retard!

First, getting a pound off a 1000w light might be amazing for you but that's pretty standard buddy. 0.5g per watt is nothing major. When people are getting 2lbs. + per 1000w then the community at large finds that to be an accomplishment.

Obviously a plant vegged twice as long will yield more! Is this a conclusion you came to on your own or did you read it in a book? A plant vegged 8 weeks versus a plant vegged 4 weeks will always produce more. Doesn't matter if it's a 600w or 1000w.

Judging by the majority of your statements and your lack of knowledge I am guessing you have an 85f closet with CFL's. Who cares if you grow with CFL's. Lots of guys do it and get killer buds. If it works for them what the fuck matters? Some people have restrictions that don't allow them to grow with HID lights. Some people are growing a plant or two for personal consumption. Don't they have the right to come to a forum?

The fact that you think that all the knowledge you need is in the grow bibles goes to show just how ignorant you really are. Those books have great resources but everyones situation is different and those books don't cover half the shit you will need to know for your specific grow.

5 gallon or 10 gallon has nothing to do with plant health. Putting your plant into a pot that is too big for it will for sure stunt it's growth. If the OP is growing anything under 6' tall then a 5 gallon pot is MORE than enough.

Two 5 gallon plants grown correctly will yield more than a 10 gallon plant. If you knew shit you would know this.

You are on a mission to correct stuff on RIU? Are you kidding me toolbag!! You're knowledge is at best on par with the kid I pay to clean my grow room. You need to learn a whole lot more before you start dishing shit out. You are probably the sole reason some people's plants are laying on the floor dead.

Seriously, shut the fuck up and start reading the threads and try and learn something.

Thank the grow gods! Everything you say I believe to be accurate. Somebody else has seen the light in regards to this obnoxious, over zealous know it all. Stuck in his own mind thinking his way is the only way. You would think he is publishing his own bible shortly. Problem is he's the only one who would read it!

I'm with you Swisher. That guy is an ass clown. I wouldn't let him sweep the floor in my room let alone take advice from him. remember this thread you started last month? https://www.rollitup.org/marijuana-plant-problems/510696-problem-seedlings.html you were able to sprout 0/63 seeds!!! 0/63!!!! i got news for you, the dump i took this morning knows more about growing than you. you wouldn't take advise from me?? i wouldn't listen to you if i were trying to tie my shoe. i know your type to well. you have a fat bankroll so you buy every overly complicated and expensive hydro system and that "kid" you pay to "clean your room" is more then likely doing the actual grow work and you just bought the equipment. in reality you have not a single post anywhere to be found to show that you have any skill other than writing large checks to the grow stores. in conclusion, suck a dick you fake ass mother fucker.

Don't even get me started on your threads pal. Looks to me like you are stealing fotos from your friends computer. You have been a member for like a week and you claim to be an expert. You have 1 grow thread and that shit has plants from 3 different rooms with you claiming that all 3 are the same. Are you kidding. Don't let your buddy catch you using his photos.

There's a reason the seedbank gave me new seeds pal. I narrowed the problem down to a fungi in my propogation tray or heavy X-Ray by cutoms. Either way the new ones worked out just fine. I haven't seen any pictures of a single bud you've produced so I wouldn't talk shit if I were you. I put my pics up and then I take them down. I don't like them floating around the internet.

Are you jealous cause I have money and I worked hard for it? That's your problem bud, not mine. Don't be a hater just because you are being exposed as a fraud bitch. Now I'm gonna follow you around and make sure your bitch ass doesn't ruin any other newbs grow room. You are a fucking clown. What till the other growers get on the computer and read this shit. My guess is you'll be back on whatever other sites you use claiming RIU is bullshit or the internet sucks. That seems to be your MO.
