Lying To Get Ahead

So how do you feel about lying to get ahead?

Do you feel it's OK to lie about something like a previous job you held or a degree you didn't actually earn?

I don't.......that kind of stuff will always come back to haunt you IMO. Not even worth it. How embarassing to get fired because the company you work for discovered a lie......the truth, no matter how fucked up, is always the best choice in my experience in life.

I am a firm believer of stretching the truth at times.

I've never outright lied about attending this or that, but what I have done is chalked myself up a notch on how long I was in a given school or location.

Helps to "fill the gaps."

Ambiguity is a kind of powerful thing at times, too. In example, I have employment gaps that even the above doctoring can't heal. I tend to look for work outside my "primary field" (ie, a trade that I went to "some" school for and worked in for 5-6 years straight) and just say I'm a freelance (in my trade) and that I look for other jobs "on the side" (like the one I'm applying for and don't seem desperate at all for {points points points, for some reason they never want to hire a guy who acts like he needs a job...}) --this allows me to simply say "business is slow" for why I'm looking, and effectively fills all employment gaps because I started my freelance business "when I left my [trade] job"...

So yeah. I'm a bullshit artist. I think that's what they call it. But I do make it look good. Well, maybe not. I mean, it's true, technically. But I sure put a lot of whipped cream on their sunday.

I don't consider this "lying" because it's all true, technically, except maybe the date-exxagerating. The rest is all truth. I just leave out the parts about how I don't try at all to upkeep my freelance work load and tend to stay home gardening indoors... ;)

I dont feel great about lying. I am of the opinion that when you lie you hand your power over to the other person.

I agree in most cases, but consider a person whose gone job searching for 5..6...8 months, and still nothing. At that point, I think I'd really start to consider saying "fuck it, what's the worst that could happen? I get the job, keep it for a few months while at least a little income comes in, which is better than what I'm getting now, nothing..".

How often do you think employers actually check every single detail on every applicants resume?

I don't really have an opinion on it. People have to do what they have to do, I suppose.

I guess I don't like it in politics very much, but I got used to it.

Definitely not a fan in the political arena.

I should clarify that my above was in the case of applying for remedial jobs of unimportance. ;)

I don't usually outright lie, but may leave some stuff out. Altar nation pretty much covered my modus operandi. never say something that can be easily discovered as being false.....unless you have a reason to cover your ass already concocted just in case

I've been looking for a job in my field for over a year......I still don't lie. I guess one has to do what they need to do though....

Anyone read the news article where employers are requesting your facebook login info at job interviews so they can log in and see what kind of person you are? I thought it was interesting. It would suck if you just told a whopper then they asked for your facebook.

I read an article about that and it's interesting because one of the things mentioned in the article that the employers wanted to see was length of time at previous jobs and if it matches resumes. However I would have to say unless I was desperate for the job as soon as they asked for me to either hand over a FB password or to log into it for them I would be leaving that interview. My private life is exactly that my PRIVATE life.

I'd never give an employer my facebook login info. That's madness. I wouldn't provide them with my facebook info at all. if they happen to find me, they can see what I make public. That's fair.

if someone never saw what happened, they only truth they have is the one u give them.

fuck it... lie.... everyone else does.

have no problem with it...the worst they can do is fire you..you probably do not get hired if you tell the truth in the beginning.

id rather gat a job and prove what i can do and have to explain WHY i lied later. its better than never getting the job.

According to news outlets, it's becoming commonplace. Big Brother is a few years late but he's making up for lost time imo.
I don't have a FB, never had Myspace or anything. I just don't see why anyone would want or need to know every little detail of my life. They probably don't even interview people like me.

EDIT: the latest article I read made specific mention of employers looking for things like lewd pictures or possible sex with minors. They aren't just looking to see your employment history, they don't need your FB for that.
