Making cannabutter

I was debating on whether or not to use water when making butter, but I've had it done both ways and I enjoyed the butter made with water because it drains out the chlorophyll and crummys while the butter holds the terpenes and good shit! I bake at just below 250 for 40 mins then boil the water add butter add an Oz popcorn buds and sugar trim. Then let simmer on low heat for 30 minutes. Another good thing with water you don't have to worry about frying your green and getting burnt taste that's a mistake I made the first go around..
So opinions, should I use water yes or no and why?

I've never used water when I make infused olive oil. I always wondered what the purpose of the water was. I actually like the weed taste myself so having the green stuff around doesn't bother me. I do use cured material so most of the chlorophyll is gone.

I use a rice cooker to boil cannabutter. If it runs out of water, the butter will burn.
However, I made a batch with coconut oil and accidentally boiled out all the water -- and it did *not* burn. Hmm...

It was my understanding that the water acts like water curing allowing all the water soluble stuff to pass into the water layer preventing it from ending up with the good stuff going into the oil layer. But, in my experience it takes a lot of water to accomplish anything. I don't like the taste so I think next time I'll water cure first, then make budder or coco oil.

Using water does not remove the pot flavor it removes the grass taste. Imho the food tastes way better that way

Best yet, The magical butter machine. Bought a year ago,a bit pricey but works great. You can infuse oils, butter, make tinctures, rso, and a few other things. Very little mess which is a bonus,i'm messy as hell.

The whole point of water in butter is to lessen the chances of burning it. The removal of chlorophyll, etc, is just a positive byproduct of that process. This is a common technique in cooking. The water won't allow the mixtures temperature to go above waters boiling point, 212F/100C, which is well below the burning point of the milk solids.

I most def use water, it makes it so the butter dont burn, I put my butter in the pan melt it, I than add my popcorn buds and sugar leafs (I use over 2 oz's pr lb of butter) than I pour in enough water to just keep it at the top of my mixture, I heat it into a slow roll (dont let it boil) than I turn it down to low on my slow cooker and let it simmer for upto 8 hrs, I would put mine up against any ones lol!

Butter is my fave now, I dont even bake with it, I put it on left over vegtables, potatoes, noodles, on an english muffin, I use it on all kinds of stuff, heat your stuff first than put your cannabutter on after, when I use noodles I always put cheese on it so it soaks up the butter and I dont waiste any.

I have also started to spice my butter with garlic, onions, chives, etc, since I dont bake with it I like to give it some flavor, I love it on my hash browns in the morning, My butter is pretty potent so before I eat my dose I get ready to start my day, after I eat i get up and go, if I dont I will sit in my lazy boy and chill all day lol! so be ready to start your day if you have things to do before you eat it, it will hit you and you will love what ever you are doing lol!

water is to keep it from burning the butter, I usualy have to add water to it during my 8 hr simmer! the longer you simmer it the more it dont taiste like cloriphil! and the more medicine you get out of it! just dont over heat it, I dont even use a thermometer, I have been doing it for a while, heck I do all kinds of chores and stuff while im simmering it, I just check on it now and than to make sure it is just simmering and dont cook to hot!

Peace

I used to stand over my double boiler, stirring for an hour and a half, hoping to get every last bit of THC into my butter. Sometimes the results were great. Sometimes less than great. Either way it was time consuming and hit or miss. I tried adding water once. I put the butter in the fridge after making it with the water. After a week in the fridge, I pulled it out and found lots of mold on it. Not sure if it was the water or some other problem, but either way I never did that again.

3 years ago I got a Magic Butter machine. The results are quick, easy and consistent. I even use the trimming from my plants instead of the buds and still get great results.
I have to warn my friends not to eat an entire cookie unless they have extensive experience with edibles. Commercial edibles here are limited to 10 mg. I'm guessing one of my cookies is about 40-50 mg.

I haven't gotten into infusing anything else like olive oils or making tinctures but may give that a go as this machine does it all!

Thanks everyone for the splendid replies, and I think I'll keep using the water method, at least until I can get me one of them magic butta makers!
I know I felt the butter a bit but it wasn't as intense as I thought maybe I just need to simmer it longer on the stove top. I was just afraid that after too long cooking up could deplete the potency but after hearing y'all go for 8hrs and come out with the best results I'm going to have to give it ago, peace take it easy, toke on!

They are pretty wicked you set the temp it grinds everything down and you can set the temp to several weed friendly presets. It's kinda like the show time chicken cooking deal from the late 90's just set it and forget it. Lol

The oven with no water on 180 to 200 works great for me. I leave it (olive oil) in all day. I have heard that saturated fats (butter, coconut oil) absorb more THC but I like something that's liquid at room temp.
