Making Tincture with Medshed

Glad you found this thread again CAS. I have been meaning to update with the dry ice extraction recipe. Basically, it requires much more hash/kief and a little more liquid to absorb the extra plant material. Here's the recipe I followed last time and it worked well. I used the Otto#1 kief and the dose is about 10 drops. I'm guessing the dose could be a bit less with a more THC dominant strain.

7 grams Dry Ice extracted hash
.5 Oz vodka
1.25 Oz Glycerine
Mix vodka and hash - sit overnight
add .25 oz Glycerine - heat (with lid off container but on crock) in crock pot for 3.5 hours
add 1 oz glycerine - heat (with lid off container but on crock) in crock pot for 3.5 hours

You may notice I didn't heat the vodka with the lid on the jar this time. Since I was adding more liquid I wanted to evaporate more of it off so it would still fit in the one ounce dropper bottle. I did a double batch (14 grams for 2 ounces of tincture) and I think it turned out about right as far as final proportions. Unfortunately, I spilled some (close to half an ounce) when I was pouring into the dropper bottles so I can't say for sure. You should be able to increase proportions on this recipe up to any amount and make as much tincture as you want. I'll be testing that theory when I chop those Qush plants soon... :-)

Regarding how long an ounce of tincture lasts, it all depends on how often you use it and how strong you like it. ;-) I figured 1 ounce = about 30 ml, 10 drops (one dose) = about .5 ml, so you get about 60 doses from a bottle. YMMV

So you add .25 oz of glycerin then 1 oz of vodka? Why the vodka at the end? Do you mean glycerin (giving the correct total of 1.25 oz of glycerin)?

You are correct about adding glycerine rather than vodka at the end. I fixed the post above so it is now correct. I need a better editor for my cookbook ... ;-)

Sweet, commencing tincturing as we speak! I used 8 grams of hash to bump up the dose a tad. Also, instead of using vodka, I used 99.99% ethanol (200 proof). Now I let it sit :)

I'm sure it would work with tequila but it would affect the taste. The cooking process evaporates the alcohol but I think the tequila flavor would remain. The taste of the tincture should be just like the smell of the raw hash/kief, with no alcohol taste at all.

I have a question about the filtering. Is this step for making the final tincture smoother? Does it end up filtering out some of the hash? Have you tried it without filtering? Also, is that a reusable coffee filter that you show?

Hey CAS - filtering is critical IMO. If you don't filter the tincture will separate and you'll have sludge at the bottom of the bottle that is a PIA to mix when you want to use it. I think the sludge is just trichome "shell" anyway and the good stuff is all suspended in the solution.

Regarding filters, I use a reusable coffee filter. The gold ones are the best but the one I have has a solid bottom and is a hassle to use. I mostly use a cheap plastic mesh filter.

Sweet, now that I have had it cooking a while I see exactly what you mean. It is starting to get sludgy at the top. I'll be sure to grab one of those filters and let you know the final results.

Rebecca's Apothecary in Boulder has the best selection. Whole Foods also has a few bottles.
I'll have to write that down, do they carry all kinds of odd type containers? Looking for a place with containers for oil. nobodies into butane extract here?

they have a lot of container types there, it's in the heart of Boulder and popular with the DIY natural medicine crowd. certainly worth checking out at least

Just read this thread. Great stuff. Thanks to Medshed for writing it and True for pinning it. Btw, can anyone tell me what rice creepers are? I travel extensively and am always on the lookout for a discrete vehicle for meds.

Thanks Bubba. FYI - I'm now using about 4.5 grams of hash per ounce of tincture. I think that works out to roughly 5 mg THC per drop of finished product.

Chewberto is right about the rice creepers. I have a recipe for those too. I'll try to post that up this weekend. I always travel with rice creepers. In fact I was just in Florida this week, made tolerable with some creepers for the evenings...
