Male to Female Ratio Theory Question

My friend reckons that when your plants are sexing and a male appears and you get rid of it then another plant will turn into a male because they are 'conscious' of the the fact there are no males in the near vicinity to fertilize them. If they've all sexed female I've also been told that one will turn hermaphrodite because of the same reason, they can 'sense' there are no males around. Anyone know if this is a proven theory? It seems to be happening to me.

Sounds like utter bs, but who knows. Hermies are usually the result of some form of stress on the plant.
