Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg is in a hearing of the House Financial Services Committee right now. Should make for a interesting listening. Hopefully.

Zuck's Openning statement:

I would be really curious to have a discussion with @rollitup on this thread. I don't think that Facebook is all that different than Rollitup in a lot of ways at the surface with the issues that have been shown to exist with governments like Russia using their military to attack democracies across the world. I don't think there is a easy fix, and find it funny when Zuck touts kicking some Russians and an Iranian off his platform the other day as you have been having to do that for years.

I don't own and have never built a website, so I may be wrong, but I hope to learn how you guys view it.

Maxine Waters just asked about is there any fact checking going on in posts.

That is were the problem is, they keep talking about paid ads and whatnot but it is the massive amount of posts that they make in order to flood any conversations that is the issue. But I don't know if it can be fixed without stifling the speed that people have been accustomed to.

What they're saying: Waters charged Facebook with conducting "a massive voter suppression effort that will move at the speed of a click."

"Your claim to promote freedom of speech does not ring true, Mr. Zuckerberg. Perhaps you believe that you are above the law." — Rep. Maxine Waters

It won't effect Rollitup at all for several reasons.

Basically, this is a discussion forum on a not for profit domain run by a select few people. As such, they can't be held responsible for people spreading false news. To a point at least.

Facebook is different. They actually allowed known Russian accounts to spam ads for money. That's not in the same ilk as some bot posting crap on this forum.

It's a lot like fake ID's: it's nearly impossible to hold a small company responsible for hiring an undocumented immigrant that presented fake ID's because they're not trained how to spot things of that nature.

But if you're IBM with a human resources department bigger than most companies and you get caught hiring 250 undocumented immigrants? Yeah. That's a pattern of abuse and you're going to be held accountable for it.

Right on, that makes sense logistically. But then they won't stop the problem with Russian interference. It is not the ads that makes the biggest difference, it is the constant cat fishing with sock puppets that stop people from seeing strait. The congress is not there yet, but eventually it will have to be dealt with/considered. That is where the most danger lies in recruiting nutters that would do everyone harm.

Rep Joyce Beatty (D-OH) just crushed Mark Zuckerberg (I am not watching live anymore it is pretty boring).

From what I've seen most of the trolls and socks here are American Trumpers and do not appear to be Russians, I'm not an expert, but any that I've had a hard look at don't appear to be Russian, I don't think this place is worth their effort. Most are racists, revenge psycho socks, antisocial personalities or just plain old fashioned assholes.

Someone might post a list of confirmed Russians though. The main issues seem to be shit spreading on here from other social media platforms like Facebook, twitter and Instagram. In particular many of the memes posted by racists and trolls appear to be of Russian origin, they appear to be writing the script for American and Canadian fools and traitors. We see their narrative being repeated here often, they are working on a defense for Trump now, since he is incapable of doing it himself with out confessing on national TV.

Humans monitor this site, they don't do it much on the big platforms, RIU uses volunteer admins and they track this shit, as well as bots, trolls and false accounts. Anybody can easily create a new account on RIU, I recently joined a secular Buddhism site and the security was way tighter than here, they were hacked and almost destroyed though. The recent site upgrade to the latest version of the forum software probably addressed many security issues too. It's not perfect but the users make RIU a tough nut for the Russians to be effective on, between the Admins and the vigilance of the users (at least in politics)makes this a harder target than other platforms that are more automated

Fake bullshit that is written to enrich others ought not be given the same protections as the truth.

Don't know, but Aoc earns big points on this one. Anyone dumb enough to call her dumb, is just plain dumb.

Aoc: would it be alright if I ran ads on Facebook targeting republicans running for re-election by saying they voted for the green new deal?

Muck zarkerberg: uh...huh...what?

The only Facebook ads I ever seen try to sell me grow equipment and new fertilizer that just hit the market. It's always some synthetic shit and I'm 100% organic. I never clicked on ads before just annoying I wish you could get rid of ads for good.
From what I understand it is more about being able to pinpoint you. How I used these things in the past when trying to advertise for businesses, is you get a list of people you want to sell stuff to, the data analysis part will spit out who you should target based on the previous customers data.

The problem is that this gives the trolls a target list to then catfish.

Oh the tales that Zuckerberg tells. Facebook is dirty.

The trail of names:
White supremacist propaganda outlets -->Daily Caller --> Check Your Fact --> George Kaplan (Facebook executive) --> International Fact Checking Network --> Facebook

Who is who:
Daily Caller is a right wing white supremacist media outlet
Check Your Fact is a division of Daily Caller
George Kaplan is now a Facebook executive. He is also a long time right wing political leader and former member of GWB's cabinet.
International Fact Checking Network maintains a list of certified fact checking organizations that meet their standards
Facebook - no explanation needed

Ok, so, Zuck can spin this how he likes and the tale seems complicated but it's not really. The whole story comes down to this:

Daily Caller owns a fact checking division that advises Facebook.

Daily Caller

Daily Caller - Right Biased - Conservative - Republican - Libertarian - Not Credible
RIGHT BIAS

These media sources are moderately to strongly biased toward conservative causes through story selection and/or political affiliation. They may utilize strong loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes), publish misleading reports and omit reporting of information that may damage conservative causes. Some sources in this category may be untrustworthy. See all Right Bias sources.

  • Overall, we rate the Daily Caller strongly right biased based on story selection that almost always favors the right and Mixed for factual reporting due to numerous failed fact checks. The Daily Caller is a source that needs to be fact checked on a per article basis.

Disinformation is spread through out American society by people on Facebook who post the stuff from Facebook to here. Also Instagram has been flooded by Russian created memes and they are being posted by Trumpers and trolls here. These people don't care if Trump betrayed the country to the Russians, violated the constitution and the rule of law, they also don't care if they spread Russian propaganda. RIU is fairly secure in my opinion, between the human admins and the vigilance of the users, it is a hard target and not worth the effort.

The Russians not only helped finance the 2016 GOP election campaign, but provided a vast array of other "services" to Trump and the GOP, they know this too and that makes the lot of them traitors. They ain't just "getting the brown folks", they are fucking over their own country and children's future (your kids too) with treason and are unfit to hold office.

RIU is part of America and the entire society is under pernicious influence from a hostile foreign power who owns the POTUS, they are exploiting and exacerbating existing social divisions, divide and conquer. They also have thousands of nuclear weapons pointed at us too. Who else has thousands of nuclear weapons pointed at the USA?

I click on Boomer Bill's College of Rock and Roll Knowledge face book page everyday to find interesting things to post on the "on this day" thread. So there is a connection between the two sites. If you don't mind a nice stretch. . . . . . .

Having thousands of nukes pointed at you by a hostile foreign power who also owns your POTUS is heavy shit indeed. I used to come here for growing info and to share also, Trump brought me to the politics section and toddlers alone in cages on the southern border motivated me to want to make a difference. It's the same for anybody with a heart and a brain, patriots care about others and their country. Racist put hate before their country and even their own families, fear and hate make people fuck themselves and their country.

The GOP is against the legalization of pot, look at Florida and Maine as examples where they thwarted the will of the people, Mitch McConnell is against legalization too. Maybe more Americans should act like patriots and not racist traitors, pot might be legal then and Putin wouldn't own the POTUS and the GOP.
