MCOB LED? from cobgrowlights

Ya true enough. I'm too busy growing to do the DIY bit. Not sure about the IR. Perhaps incremental benefits that won't make it cost effective to the buyer. I grow fine with the lights as is and have thousands of photos to attest.

I was the one that suggested they use a simpler side vent design but keep the Web vent backing.
the side vent case cost to produce was higher and people want a light that costs a bit less. The grow results will however be improved.

Mars is definitely not a benchmark for success. The GrowthStar are better than any Mars and I'm not going back to that nor HPS. I was just referring to the flat side vent that are not louvered like on GrowthStar 6X MCOB.

The new light is MCOB and with more attractive specs than the current models, even DIY growers can afford to try one for themselves.

If you deal with China then yes you will get shit on. So deal with a North American company that will back their customers. I learned this the hard way. Chinese companies lie about specs because their sales reps are trying to meet their sales quotas so they don't lose their jobs. This is a flawed business model that won't change anytime soon. Short term thinking.
Actually what I'd like to see, and which nobody is currently producing, is a lamp with a combination of red and blue COBs, not single LEDs. Like 1 blue to 3 red. I know there are colored COBs out there but seem to be low quality. Epistar has them but how reliable are Epistar? The COB on that linked page actually has 3 different colors in it, RGB, and separate current pins for each. Separate single color COBs would be better because nobody wants green and few people would want 1:1 RB ratios.

I also found some "full spectrum" COBs, similar to the MCOBs mentioned in this thread. Pretty cheap in quantity.

I like that 6x 300. These are nice looking lights, I'm just way to confused about LED to know if these really are good or not!

a lot of mfrs make pretty lights that are pretty on your shelf when they quit.thats not saying anything about these particular lights, just an observation.

Tired of seeing all this MCOB spam in literally every damn forum. At a certain point you cant say you aren't an advertiser. same 3 posters every time too.I feel like something needs to be done

This is MCOB/COB.

For those that don't know LEDs. Just be aware that most advertisers show total watts and not the actual watts. Actual watts is what the name implies. Total watts is misleading because the actual draw from the wall will be 40-60% of the total. This is why a lot of inexperienced growers (regarding LEDs) will get poor results thinking they have a certain wattage when in fact it is 40-60% less. Myself and other third party grow testers have been using the GrowthStar MCOBs since they came out in 2013.

@Tstat if you want to know if something is good or not look at videos or photos of their grow trial results. I have tried many different COB/MCOB company's lights. Some suck, some are ok, and you just have to pick the one that makes the most financial sense. For most people on this forum that means DIY with some white light that won't work as well for growing mmj - but still works.

what? LOL

just because somebody makes up some arbitrary higher wattage number does not make "total watts" valid

in the real world, watts at the wall = "total" watts

either that or you better patent your amazing energy creating light right quick....

not to beleaguer a point but i had to correct this for you

For those that don't know LEDs. Just be aware that most advertisers show "total" watts and not the actual watts. Actual watts is what the name implies. "Total" watts is misleading because it is some arbitrarily higher number based on things like the maximum wattage the chips could actually pull in a different fixture driven to the limit, or what size HID the LED is designed to replace, to sometimes no basis at all . This is why a lot of inexperienced growers (regarding LEDs) will get poor results thinking they have a certain wattage when in fact it is 40-60% less.

Thanks for your opinion. Bobby_G are you a commercial grower as well?

I'm pointing out that when people new to LEDs go to online marketplaces like Alibaba, Amazon, or Ebay, the actual watts their plants are getting is not the same as the watts that are displayed in the product description page.

I would like to see some photos that someone has done 60-days from seed using their 'white lights' if you have some to share. I tried it and the results were quite clear when looking at the stems and roots. If white lights will work better and the price is justifiable then I would want to know as I'm a big investor in LED grow lights.

Oh, boy! This ought be good! *gets popcorn*
Lol I'm not looking to start fights on a grow forum. I want to know if I'm getting my moneys worth for what I've been paying for. I have tried white light LEDs as well as blue/red, 3w, 5w, upside down starlight, right side up laserbeams and more. The lights I use now work for veg and bloom without the gimmicks. If someone can 'show me the light' that would be appreciated. Because otherwise I must have been doing it wrong all of these years which is no good. If there is a better way let me know and I will make recommendations to the companies I buy from to fix their shit.

well there is no doing it wrong, but there is certainly doing it better with tech that didnt exist just a few years ago.

im as blurple as they come, but im also not claiming theyre the be-all end-all. lotta good techs out there.

why dont you tell us about what kind of full spectrum lighting you used and why you didnt like the results. when you say "DIY with some white light that won't work as well for growing mmj - but still works." it sounds like maybe youre a few years behind the curve as those results are the exact opposite of most people who move from monos to full spectrum. and mcobs may be efficient but at the end of the day theyre still a mono-based spectrum and photons are photons

@welight is working on a multi-channel cob as you describe, perhaps he can chime in here

I have sent Bobby-G two samples of the 135 and 275 Watt custom white COB's, By end of April we expect to have the same in 4 channels. So the main part of the COB will 5000k and 2700K and a termination point for each colour. the objective being you can dial in any colour between the two, ie tune in 3500K. Will require dual channel or 2 drivers, the other two channels will be a small amount of 660 and 730nm.
Cheers
Mark
