me and the wife just picked this little one from the shop yesterday. so i built a box for it to give it all the love it needs. this is 28w of led bars and this is my first growbox. it looks so cool now i want to do a micro grow inside a box lol.

anyone growing conifers? got any tips and tricks for me?

I grow longleaf, loblolly and slash pine. Not in a grow box though. If I had some of those tall thin pots, I would plant a few longleaf's with an eye toward selling them in a year or two.

I planted 1.1K seedlings in skips in my two year old longleafs a couple three weeks ago. My first time with containerized seedlings. They are so much easier to plant. Plus it's getting hard to get bare root in some trees.

looks nice man. the only reason mine is in a grow box is the lights are just very bright for our living room and i gotta say i took it out of the box yesterday and it was so deep yet bright green like we spray painted the mf. i dont know if thats good or bad but inclined to think its a positive thing haha.

it will survive but will it thrive i doubt it lol i’m just trying to keep it as a miniature bonsai type christmas tree. if i put it outside it will probably grow too tall with too far apart branching and that will fuck up my bonsai plan tbh haha

Nice. We have a big ol' Norfolk Island pine inside, but that's the only conifer-type plant I've ever seen people keep indoors. They don't need much to keep them happy, just some dry fertilizer a few times a year, but like many houseplants they stay a kind of miniature version of what they'd be in the wild. So yeah, I guess the bonsai idea would work better inside

bet its a beauty post it up if you feel like it
yeah they are not like cannabis at all for sure very low maintenance nice change from taking care of canna inside and tomatoes outside in summers.

Here's a pic from a couple years ago, it's filled out a bit since then but I topped it so it hasn't gotten any taller (it was headed for the ceiling...)

I've read they can grow over 200 ft tall in the wild, and their leaves droop down indoors vs pointing up when they're outside.

and after seeing your photo i both want this and dont want it because we really dont have the space. bonsais for me all the way i guess haha

Thanks! We've had it for about 8 years, and my mom had it for who knows how long before then. I always see them in stores around the holidays, little pots with 3 or 4 babies in them...

yeah man we saw this one and wife was like how cool would it be if in the future we can celebrate around this one with our kids we will grow it together and then with our kids it will probably be here after we left earth and all that sentimental bs and i immediately agreed with her haha

Wow, Great job! I have two of these and they look nothing as good as yours! How often do you feed/water?

Thanks! It was already about 4 feet tall by the time I got it, so I had a bit of a head start, and it's actually one main trunk and two smaller trees planted right next to it.

I water it once a week with all the other houseplants, about 1/2 gallon at a time (more in summer, less in winter). I try to keep it moist and not let it dry out. At one point it dropped a bunch of large branches and I think it was because I was letting it dry out too much. I fertilize a few times a year, not on any sort of schedule. I use either Alaska Fish fertilizer or Holly-Tone and worm castings.

Looks pretty good to me! Mine might have been a bit taller when I got it back in 2015, and I've potted up twice since then. The pot it's in now is 18" across at the top, so I guess in the 12-15 gallon range.

Thanks! I'm going to re-pot mine soon, and about topping, does it cause them to branch out? Yous is in a pretty big pot no wonder it's so tall!

I don't think they really respond much to topping. Maybe a bit of lengthening of the lower branches, but it's not going to sprout two new tops like a weed plant. It's been a while since I topped mine, it might resume vertical growth at some point but nothing noticable so far...

Yeah I only did mine because the last tier of branches it grew was above the top of those windows...once the new growing tip got a few inches above that tier I just snipped it off
