it couldve been a hybrid,that seems to be an awesome mutation to be resistant to any pesticides
I think you have it mixed up.Dousing them with herbicide is how they did it.

it's just semi-natural selection. The army sprays the crops a lot die but some live, breed the survivors and after a few generations there is a herbiside resistant crop...
