I think you have it mixed up.Dousing them with herbicide is how they did it.

Damn, I want some seeds from that weed, if it is true, which i dought...

it's just semi-natural selection. The army sprays the crops a lot die but some live, breed the survivors and after a few generations there is a herbiside resistant crop...
