moldy soil

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right place for this, but it seemed appropriate to me.

The other week i mixed up some perlite, coco, and black gold organic soil. been using it for a while and i like it. Although i noticed my mixture lacked some nutes, so i picked up some espoma plant tone the other day and mixed it in with my soil mix, added water and mixed it around. Now, ive been keeping my soil in a big Tupperware tub(closed lid) inside my tent, with my plants (peppers and herbs as well as other goodies) sitting on top of it. Today i opened my tub to get some soil for a RP sour kush seedling that is ready to be transplanted, and i was surprised with cobweb mold all over the top of my soil. I understand why this happened (high humidity from the tub being closed plus the addition of the plant tone+ water). Keep in mind, ive been doing this same routine for a few months now, but this problem just started once i added the plant tone.

my question to you guys is, what should i do? Is this beneficial for the plants that will be planted in this soil? should i treat the soil with h2o2/some other remedy and continue to use it, or trash it and start over, without adding water and letting it "cook"? There isnt a lot of soil, so if i have to start over to ensure smooth sailing, i have no problem doing so.

thanks in advance, and sorry if this post is a bit jumbled...havent smoked today haha

that is not a problem , that is the beautiful life in the soil. :weed: i cant remember what species of mold that is but it is VERY healthy for the babies. i think that plant tone contains mycorrhizae and that could be what it is , but i doubt it. since the soil has been closed off with little air , i would stir it up real good and if it smells real healthy and rich then use it right away. if it has a slight uh "sitting smell" then stir it up real good every day for a few days then use it.

you might wanna plant just one in there for a few days just to make sure it aint got too much food in it , but i believe your ready.

 for the pretty soil

when my 5 year old (used 50 times) soil is mixed just right , it has that same sheen of white mold on top. that mold just lets me know that im using better then store bought soil.

h2o2?!?! NO way.. Your soil is alive and well. If anything leave it alone for awhile. Then turn it to keep it from going anaerobic.. But please don't kill the life with h2o2
and the mold is fungi, if you have a microscope its a real beauty to view!

awesome! thank you man. i figured in the theory, that it was a good thing. i know fungi is good, but unclear about mold. But i wanted to gather opinions, being that this is my first and 1/2 times trying organic. (dont ask about the 1/2 :eyesmoke: haha )

I mixed everything up some more, smelt rich and earthy. i went a head and transplanted some peppers into pots with this fresh mix. well see how they do!

for reference, here is a picture of the plant tone ingredients, it does note the addition of certain bacterial elements. 20130805_152725.jpg

Mycelium at its finest , ESpoma products are loaded with bennies and I would just work it in a little more next time :) When used as a top dress , it is best to allow it to be washed in as it is intended when used as such :)

i felt pretty confident in my "working in" skills, but i guess next time i will mix er up better! haha

its so good to see people that have actually studied plants on here. that "over the counter" epsoma food is better then most if not all foods found at "grow shops". it has everything you need for your baby plus the addition of a LOT of beneficial microbes/fungus in there.

thanks for the reminder professer. mycelium is the fungus your seeing and it is great for the plants.

oh yeah, ive heard great things about their products.

i grew mushrooms for the longest time, so i am well familiar mycelium. Working with mushroom mycelium for a few years was really fun. Sectoring and isolating on Agar, as well as growing them to fruit....cant forget actually enjoying the FRUITS of my labor :hump:

Honestly it was my work with myco, that brought me to worry about this cobwebb mold, as it is (amung others, trichoderma!) pure evil :fire: in the myco community.

If it smells earthy and good then you know. Your soils good, I'd never pour h2o2 on soil you'd only kill benefical bacteria and micro organisms .

I have a nice sheen of that on my SS. Can't wait for the space in my grow room to put plants in it!!! You gotta love the fungus among us

Sorry for the confusion, When i said myco, i meant mycology. What i meant was, when trying to grow mushrooms trich is your biggeest enemy.

ya huge diff between growin shrooms and mary. i live in the outdoor shroom capital of the world, so no need to grow em. just go to the pasture almost every morning and they growin tall!
