Most beneficial lighting for a 4x4?

A 600w HPS, OR 1000w? I'll be using an air-cooled RAPTOR reflector. The reflector takes up about 3/4 of the room, so I thought the light spread and PAR would be great!

I was going to use a 1000w, but decided maybe too much light might reduce the overall yield due to too much heat etc... Just need a little input. cheers :) :bigjoint: :peace:

Side question: Which growing style is best for yield with the smallest possible timeframe and highest yield.
Would that be using the SoG method with Rooted clones?

Rooted clone straight to 12/12 SoG is quick, & effective. Little to no veg time, or trainning will make the 600 watter all you need in lighting.

So the extra wattage won't increase yield? Some people have got only 10-12oz from a 1k HPS, whereas I've used only a 400w and acheieved 8oz - That's with only 3 plants 30 day veg.

Currently have 9 seedlings under 150w of CFL's, trying to find the best mother. So I'm not going to be able to use SoG atm.

If you are not growing trees? Then the 600 is fine.

You can light up a tree while trying to penetrate the lower branches, or have multiple plants with short, dense, and even canopies.

Call me crazy, but two 400's side by side for rooted clone straight to 12/12 SoG will serve you better.

Some people are worried about plant count though.

If you were in my position, what would you do? Time is a huge factor + I want the most out the harvest as possible. + I have no mothers atm to take clones from.

So two 400's? For definite?

I was going to flower the 9 I'm trying to grow after a month and decide which is the best based on calyx to leaf ratio. Obviously take clones beforehand and then make a biased decision on which would be best once I harvest each.

Have you cloned before? What's the rush?

My perpetual micro-SoG produces 1.25 oz of smooth smokeable bud every 17 days. This is under floros with minor hps supplementation to dense out buds.

No rush, would just prefer it. Just need suggestions before I start going all out spending cash on lighting equipment

If this is going to be a hobby? You need to hold up a little. Learn to clone first before you bloom out the mother donor.

Learn about keeping bonsai moms.

Learn about perpetual harvests.

Higher wattage HPS are for bigger plants for deeper canopy penetration. If you do rooted clone straight to 12/12 SoG the higher wattage is negligible.

If it were me I would veg my 9 plants longer and slap a 1000w on them to get best penetration(probably veg em under it for last few weeks), since you have an air cooled hood it would be impractical to use 2 x 400w when a 1000w air cooled will get deeper penetration. You would still do well with a 600 in there but a 1000w will kick its ass and yield denser more developed buds lower down.

It is each to his own though

i would go with 2 600w over a 1000w personally

OP just search "400 watt hps club grow", and "600" to see what others are doing.

Watch cloning tutorials, and see my progression from a DWC raft cloner to a passive hydroponic cloner.

I've been watching club 600 for about 2 weeks, mostly just pics of peoples plants.

can you link me to some good tuts?

Watching your thread btw, ill take a look later. need to get an understanding for cloning first, like you said. that looks pretty advanced

Cool. Have you seen an hps penetration chart?

Cloning is simple. Just watch a couple Youtube vids, and look at my method in chapter 9 here:

Get creative with keyword searches.

Whats up brother ... been growin in a 4x4 for a whike using aircooled 600mh/hps. My last grow i made some modifications n got close to. .8gpw with 3/4 of a kg. Can certainly reduce the veg time having i had a 4th and thats why my next run will be with 4 different strains. Not saying this is what ya should do ... che k it out n get some ideas n mix things up n come up with what fits your circumstancesxneeds ;-) happy growin bro

I wouldn't use the gram per watt method bro, seen some grows of people getting over 2.5g/w using 1000w's. That's with everything at it's optimum, for example. co2 bags, distilled water, micro nutes, perfect temps day/night, perfect airflow intake/outtake, but these growers for the most part said. GENETICS are key to a heavy harvest. One guy said he had to go through 4-5 grows to find the "Perfect mother" and it clearly paid off lol, dude got like 2.2g/w if I remember right. He used "Blue Dream" by humboldt or GreenHouseSeeds, I can't remember but still thats insane!! All of these were 1000w grows in a 5x5 area. But I don't have the space for it, so I'm using a 4x4 instead

What was your veg times for that grow? are you happy using the 600w? Do you feel you need anymore light for the 4x4?

I'll take a look now dude :o)

I actually got decent harvests out of the 600w in the 4x4. If you can control tje heat the 1000 would probably have a better footprint for a scrog and better penetration as well!. I added Optics cxb3070 350W and the heat increase wasnt much! I got the 4000k spectrum specifically to add some blue to my hps and 4000k spectrum tested good for flowering as well!
