Mushroom Grow Journal

Hi

So, i got interested in cultivating some Mushrooms for personnel use, so i decided to grow them. I bough a kit for around £12 which had all the necessary equipment bar the spores. I bough the spores (10ml i think), advertised as P.C. Amazon for £14.99, when they came they were labeled as P.C. Golden Teacher. I have no idea on the different strains so it doesn't really concern me. I inoculated the small pot as per the instructions, an also inoculated a small jar, using brown rice flour. I didn't use a glove-box, i kept it as sterile as i could, disinfecting everything with vodka and flame! So, i guess i will see how successful i was in a few days. I have included pics of the kit, the spores, the small tub that i inoculated and the separate jar. Feel free to ask any questions.

Peace out x

Hey man. I got the kit from an online head-shop. The kit is so easy to use. I looked at it this morning and the first sign of mycelium has appeared, will get a pic when its grown some more. The skunkhaze, the 13 plants i left outdoors, i haven't checked them since, its been about 55 days. I should be going back around 4th of June, so i can update then if they are still alive. And yes, i contacted them and they sent me 10 Nirvana AK48, so i will probably be growing that this summer.

Peace out x

I'd be remiss if I didn't let you know... If you made the jar of BRF yourself, without pressure cooking it first or at least committing to pasteurizing it, it will not grow. Some mycelium might appear, but it almost certainly will also have some aspergilis or something of the sort in it.

Also, if you didn't combine it with vermiculite or some other course non-nutritious material, even if it does fully colonize... The mushrooms will not grow properly upon fruiting and will likely end up in a mess of aborts.

But kudos on the other one! That should provide you with a good amount for yourself, but I'd recommend you look into casing it if you want to get more bang for your buck (or pound, rather).

Good luck!

I did pasteurize it, only for about 30-40 mins. However, i didn't use correct substrate as you said, so yeah, i doubt if it will take off. Well, at least iv got the other one, and i have learned from my mistakes.

Well, I'd still keep it around. I'd be interested personally to see how it does. Just keep it in a warm, dry, dark area and forget about it for a while.

Pasteurizing it is mainly to keep intact beneficial bacteria in substrates such as dung. It can be done with anything in theory, but grains are much more finicky and prone to infection.

Keep us updated!

Well, just an update.

Its colonizing well, but not as fast as some other mushroom journals mention, I'm not to worried though.

I had a fair amount of spores left so i decided to inoculate two further jars. I looked at my local garden center but i couldn't find any vermiculite, so i decided to use brown rice and brown rice flour. I boiled the rice for about 40 minuets, i then mixed it with some brown rice flour. I did this on the 28th and i can see the first sign of colonization.

Peace out x

are you using the rice as the moist media? like the vermiculite?

wont the mycelum eat the rice as well?

sill it hold together when u need to "birth" it?

Yes, i am using it as a substitute to vermiculite. I was unsure if it would work, but after seeing a few grow journals on shroomery.com i decided t give it a go. One thing that seems to happen is that when growing purely in rice, less potent mushrooms grow, so we will have to see how it goes.

not sure i would give up on the potency like that. keep to the aborts and harvest early to keep it high
can u order it online?

i had to. could not find it locally either. had it shipped from oregon or something like that. got way more than i need for now but i am sure to use it with the other three strains i got.

Well, with all the journals i have read, a lot report lower potency with brown rice cakes, I'm not really worried about this.

I looked on ebay, and googled it but i couldn't find any in England. I will run into some eventually.

Gardening Warehouse Direct

they do ship internationally and vermiculite isnt a fertilizer or anything like that so it should be good.

that's really weird. vermiculite is super easy to find at garden centers here in the states.
