Is it normal for a ballast box to be hot or am I likely to come home to find my house burnt down?

They tend to get hot, not above 125 degrees farenheit though. If it is hot to tough like OW! then i would be safe and purchase another one. Make sure it ofcourse is off the floor near any water or anything flamable.

Hey...thanks to all of you for replying. I feel much safer now.

I have it with one end sitting on the skirting board so allow a bit of ventilation all round. I don't suppose these things need to be level do they?

Thanks again guys :-) thumbs up!!

Yeah, don't worry. A magnetic ballast will get really hot. Just make sure it is off the floor. And no, it doesn't need to be level.

If you have the option of running in 220, some ballasts are switchable, then do it. That may help it run a little cooler if you are having heat issues. You can also try mounting some pc fans on the ballast.
