Welcome to my first grow! Subscribe and make a post while you're here! I'm going to make some mistakes, so I'll document EVERYTHING so we can all become better growers.

This is my personal medical grow, so it's all legal and all that jazz.

This grow started about 3 weeks ago in three five gallon DWC bubblers with three plants, a Snow White feminized and two Bubblelicious regulars. The entire DWC thing went south very quick the last few weeks with bad ass algae problems, pH swings in 6 hours of 2 full points, etc. Needless to say, it wasn't working out. Since my tent is so small, I figured that some soil would be better and at least I can get some good personal smoke off this first go around.

If you want to see how we got to this point, here is the old thread (which I won't be updating anymore):

https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/640479-dwc-x-2-closet-grow.html#post8906015

Here's the breakdown:
• 36" x 20" x 60" tent in my spare room closet
• 190 CFM iPower fan
• LEDWholesalers 2(40?) CFM carbon scrubber
• Solo cups (or Safeway brand PARTY CUPS!)
• Black gold all purpose .13-.04-.13
• Three original plants have EWC/ZHO/Aquashield treatments from algae on roots
• Other plants are on straight water/rapid rooter action
• B3 and SS1 got a Thrive Alive soak in their plugs when germing

Lights
• 6500k 26w CFLs (veg)
• 2700k 26w CFLs (flower)
• 240w Blackstar LED (turning on when we get into LST zone)
• Soon purchasing 400w or 250w MH/HPS hood instead of the LED/CFL combo and use CFL as supplemental

Strains
Nirvana Bubblelicious (B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6)
Nirvana Snow White Fem (Sabrina)
Bagseed Silver Surfer from Dispensary (SS1)

Pictures!

Bubblegum pheno hunting on the Bubblelicious and hoping that we can get Sabrina (the Snow White) plant healthy enough to revive it/clone it.

Were stunted for 8 days now resuming growth, transplanted today. Bucket survivors.

Stay tuned!

Hope they come along soon.

Question though, did you find out the problem with your previous DWC? I'm putting a DWC CLoset Grower together and want to make sure I won't come across some nasty surprises.

Peace

looks like you fertilized those seedlings, or am i mistaken? me i use rapid rooters on seeds until i see the tap come out the bottom....if its soil first feed is fish of some type +humic acid always and maybe a sweetener...but thats not until 2 sets of true leaves...hydro i only work with clones never new beans......by the way, zho is awesome, but aquashield is poultry manure, so i think that might have been a little premature using it so early on those seeds sorry hope they come back quick...oh and my soil to start is 1:2 worm poop:coco rice hulls are nice or perlite as needed

Best of luck to you, I know I was pretty damn frustrated when putting together my 6 bucket rdwc together and I thought several times screw this I am gonna go get soil, this can't be worth the headache of dealing with leaks, water temps etc.

I'm 99.9% sure it was a brown algae problem/slime problem. I am pretty sure some Heisenburg tea would have solved it permanently but I feel like dropping em in soil the survivors are going to be able to fight off the disease a bit better because of how diverse all the bacteria are in the soil.

To avoid it:

• Avoid ANY light leaks into your buckets
• Don't use ANTHING organic in your buckets
• Keep res temps below 72-74 degrees F
• Make sure the water isn't completely drowning your plants (1.5" from net pot make sure roots reach for the water)
• Practice good sanitization and you'll be fine

Best advice I can give ya :)

EDIT: If a bucket gets a problem, keep some 99% iso nearby so you can dunk your measurement tools in it before testing the next bucket so that you don't spread disease. That's what happened in my case.

Nope they're not fertilized. That's just some of the Black Gold soil mixture. It does however have a super small amount of fertilizer in it, but those white rocks are not the fert.

Aquashield and ZHO can be used on a plant any time... They're beneficials, not nutrients, so they'll only benefit the plant once they start providing it food and eating the bad organisms and converting them to food.

But yeah ZHO is way awesome! Hope it helps them rebound!

Haha yeah, my problem was that my tent was so small, I was struggling just to do normal things with the buckets like get them in/out/placed. I figure once I get a bigger tent, I'll definitely give it another go around (after heavy sanitizing of everything lmao).

Just didn't want my first grow to be riddled with misery and worry start to finish haha

Uh oh the two healthiest are starting to droop after yesterday's watering. They stood up all day yesterday too afterwards!

I removed the CFLs and placed my 240w Blackstar in there, it's running cooler than all those CFLs and is probably putting out more usable light. It's about 12" above them right now, I'll get a picture of all of them under it. The leaves on those two youngings below are puffing up like we got heat stress or something.

However... why we got droopiness on SS1 and B3? Previously they were grabbing at the CFLs!

Also, what's up with B2 and Sabrina? The same deficiency is now showing in B2 that was showing in Sabrina. Notice the edges of the leaves starting to tan like hers are. Here she is too, but she's got new growth for the first time in awhile which really confuses me! They were the stunted ones with algae issues in the buckets.

Do these two need nutes?

Help would be vastly appreciated from anybody that might have an idea what's going on here.

Lol took 45 minutes with the LED running instead of the CFLs and the temp about 4 degrees lower and they're starting to point again:

grow1_consolidated_4.jpg

Here they are in the new home all together under a CFL I've set up to check on them since the LED kicks my eye's ass, then finally under the LED:

grow1_consolidated_1.jpggrow1_consolidated_2.jpggrow1_consolidated_3.jpggrow1_consolidated_5.jpg

I'm suspect that some of the issues we've gone through were heat related thus far. We'll see how things go the next 72 hours under the LED.

Good news! EVERYTHING is growing! Took measurements before bed last night just for fun on width of all the seedlings and the two bigger ones grew a ton overnight, SS1 grew 3/4" from tip to tip of fan leaves in 12 hours! The LED seems to be working awesome and keeping temps a whole 4-5 degrees cooler than CFLs.

Even the 3 from the buckets are showing new growth when I compared yesterday's pictures to today!

Pictures for everyone, and yes, I know, the soil looks incredibly wet in three of them, I just watered them to runoff last night and lights have only been on for 3 hours. I also gave them some nutes since those were the ones showing deficiencies and it seems to have kick started some growth.

Good to see a newbie doing a journal. It's the mistakes that makes us learn but all too often it's only the more experienced that post.
Just one suggestion ATM. Can you not use the dwc somewhere else (windowsill, porch etc) with something else (peppers, tomatoes etc) to get some practise/fault finding for the next run?

Yeah I probably can. I have blankets over the window in that room for stealth and light control but my friend is doing DWC and he's clueless about growing. I've helped on outdoor grows and with some collectives so I know some but never ran a whole grow myself so definitely learning fast! I'm going to help him with his DWC so by helping him learn because he wants the help I'll probably pick up some stuff. I'm going to build a small veg cab too so I might be able to build a dwc cloner to stick in it to get things down. I think I discovered part of the issue I had, two things:

• One of the nutrients, the Root 66 I believe, is derived from and has several types of kelp in it. I think this coupled with whatever slime I was growing really ruined any chance of success. I should have been running water the whole time until they got much bigger.
• Another one, the Thrive Alive (green and red) are derived from the same kelps and the green one is organic. Both at some point interacted with the plants and the Red went into the res. Oops.

Why the slime started though I'm not sure. I had no light leaks, but perhaps it was the initial one I found in Sabrina's bucket that ended up growing slime, and I contaminated the other buckets with the meters. That's my theory at least. So in hindsight, I was newbie anxious and even knew that overfeeding, feeding too soon, using the wrong stuff were all mistakes I might make but made them anyway lol

Excited that those three plants are actually recovering though, and just repotted them because I discovered what others told me was right, they were too wet, because I had too much worm casting in the soil and it was just sucking water up and making the cups super dense.

I repotted them with just black gold and didn't compact it so much and they're about a third the weight...

I see the tri-leafs as well on SS1 and B3, so when they pop in the rest of the way I'll get close ups!

Things are moving along nicely.

LED has the canopy running from 77-79 F, tent is ambiently 73-75. Humidity from 30-45ish, but normally mid 30s.

Removed dead growth from a couple of the bucket plants and they're doing fine, growing slow but establishing themselves. One is about to sprout a 5 leaf set and I expect it to be quite small, like <1" lmao. Here's some pictures, others are doing great!

Okay so been a few days and man, they've grown more than I thought! I also have kind of picked out three phenotypes of the Bubblelicious. I've got a few heavier indicas (B3 and B5), one in between (B1), and a couple ugly ass what I think to be mutant Sativas (B4, B6). Looks as if the Silver Surfer bagseed (SS1) I got is a lot more indica than the people original said it was! The Dairy Queen bagseed I sprouted is Indica, as expected.

I also got two new clones, a Girl Scout Cookies and a Banana Kush clone. The GSC is going to get LSTd and laid on her side tomorrow. Here's pictures from Day 23/24 side by side for each plant! Fun!
