n00b questions 101

I'm pretty new to this forum and so far I've found it very informative. I'm looking to start growing indoors and this has been the best place I've found. But there's a few questions I have that I haven't been able to find answers for while searching around the site.

I'm going to be doing a closet grow with 4 or 8 6500k 26 watt cfls, and using bagseed. Since it's my first try and I want to get a few grows under my belt before I drop the money on a HPS or MH setup.


I guess I'll just list my questions in order and hopefully some of you guys will have the knowledge to drop on me.

1) When I'm growing, how long should I grow in the veg state and how long should I grow for flower state?

2) during the veg state, what is the appropriate amount of time for light cycles and time cycles should I switch to for flower cycle?


3) Will I get more yield from topping or LST?

4) Will there be a noticeable heat signature coming from my closet in case the fuzz do a fly by?

5)For a beginner is it easier to grow in a large planter without having to worry about transplanting. What would happen if I start my grow in a 3 gal or 5 gal instead of working my way up?

6) With the CFLs, should there be sheet metal or tin foil lining the walls? Does that really make a difference?

7)what is the easiest way to fertilize your plants? and at what ratio fert to water is healthy?

8) When is the ideal ratio 6500k and 2700k CFL's to use during the veg and flowering cycles?


Any info would be awesome. Sry for the amount of questions but if there's any other n00bs searching for these answers it might help them as well.

I'm planning on starting my grow around thanksgiving (1 week) so I have a little time to get my shit together I hope. :shock:

Read the GROW FAQ and when you have more specific questions come back and ask away.

Secondly, go and buy the $20 150 watt HPS fixture to flower with. It will be cheaper than buying CFL's needed to flower with and will take a week less for your plants to finish.

Hope that helps and I hate being the person to tell you to read the grow faq but when you have 20 questions that is really the best thing for you to do. It doesn't take long to read, just read the section you are working on now.

It's all good. I just wanted to be pointed in the right direction, no point in fucking too much up before I get it right...where's a good place to shop for the $20 HPS? I haven't been able to find one that cheap

I recommend getting 3, 40 watt, gro lux bulbs to Veg your plants with. you can do 10 plants with this setup and 15 if you cramp them together.

Run them 24/7 until they are 12 - 18 inches or taller. Read up on making sure they are mature and how to sex.

Water once a week if you are starting out, this will keep you from overwatering.

After you are done Vegging then switch to 12/12 lighting under you $20 150 watt HPS, you can probably do 2 plants under this alright. Get two of them if you want to do 4 plants. if you had to due to money constraints you might have just used this light to Veg with.

If you have $139 go to HIDHUT.com and get the 400 watt HPS Digital ballast with refector combo.

Grow until the Trichs are right and then dry and consume.

That sums it up and you should be on your way to growing some kick ass plants now, one thing I forgot to add, go to Planet Skunk and buy some Serious Seeds plant seeds. Read up on the strains and decide what works best for you. Also I will get lamb basted if I don't add that you can also order from Attitude Seed Company and don't forget to add 420 in thediscount box for a discount that you will need to offset the shipping cost. They also sell Serious Seed brand. Serious only offeres 5 strains so you won't suffer from trying to decide which one. Chronic - would probably be a good one to start with, good smoke and good yield and grows easily. AK47 another good choice to start with, easy to grow and very potent, the reson it is second is because the smell is quite strong and you will have to add odor control, Bubblegum they offer is some of the best you will find, problem is that since you are a beginner you might mistake the slow growth in the beginning as a problem and try to fix it but once this thing takes hold it's like the magic beanstalk, it won't stop growing, White Rhino is next, and is quite potent and a decent mix of other strains, some even say it is too strong or them, Last but not least is Kali Mist, this is the best of the best when it comes to smoke but I put it last because it takes the longest to grow and since you are a beginner you have the least amount of patience, but sometime in the future definitely grow some Kali Mist.

You are right, they must do something to keep it from going to that light because both of them was pointing to the light just as yours probably was also.

anyway that is the light and they sell a reflector for it for $15 I think if you don't want to DIY.

Good luck to you, do some reading and come back and let us know how you made out but if you follow what I told you I thik you won't have any problems.
