if i were you, which im not lol. i wouldnt get my light of ebay. who knows what condition its in, if the shit wont break on shipping(pretty fragile stuff), plus who knows how powerful the ballast and the bulb is. 600 watts for 9 plants is kinda cutting it close. generally a rule of thumb is 100 watts per plant to get some good results. since you have a hydro shop near you, go see if the guy has any used lights, they usually run way cheaper and usually are in good condition. if not ask the guy there and see what he can do for you. for 9 plants i would go with a 1000 watt hps. plus you never know what kinda warranty u get with some "knockoff" ballasts, reflector ect. i bought all my stuff at a hydro shop at got a 5 year warranty on everything. it may be a little bit more expensive but it will pay off in the long run. also that plastic the guy has at ur shop sounds badass. def go with that.

Greets,

So I should aim for 1000 watt hps with digital ballast as well as a MH bulb? I thought the plastic was pretty cool and might as well grab a few feet of that, who knows might be pretty good.

your room is roughly 28 sq feet. a 1000 watt hps puts out around 140,000 lumens. do the math and you will have 5,000 lumens per sq foot. the sun is 10,000 lumens per square foot. a 600 watt hps puts out 90,000 lumens. if you were to go with a 600 you would have 3214 lumens per square foot. just some info to think about

I have that meter from eBay. It's about 6 mo. old and has worked fine so far.

Make sure you have good fans to cool those lights. All your reflectors need to be air cooled, and you need at least a 465 cfm fan for the 1000 watt hps. Metal halides run even hotter, and in a small space heat may be your biggest concern. If you supplement with CO2 you may be able to get by with hotter temps, but even then it's easy to burn your plants! Just my 2 cents...

he's right. heat really is the biggest problem in growing indoors. you just have to take proper measures to ensure that heat isnt a problem. meter looks great, all of those measurements are crucial. light sounds good too. just make sure its got the shit to seal and vent it. i dunno about a 465 cfm fan to cool a 1000 watt. i have a 270 cfm can fan on my 2 600 watters and the glass at the bulb stays so cool i can touch my hand on it and hold it there. i even use the open end of my lights to vent my room. it sucks so might air through those lights that i havent run into ventilation/heat issues in my room. but yes i am also using a 9x5x7 room. the air needs to be changed AT LEAST once every 3-5 minutes. my room is 315 cubic feet. with a 270 cfm can fan i think my room is fine. havent done the exact math but whatever. its working. so actually lol you might need a 465 cfm fan. sorry im stoned lol

Greets,

Yes, I will be sealing and venting the light. As for changing the room air out every 3-5mins or so, I'm going to be running a co2 injection system while lights are running. I don't need to vent the room while the co2 is running right?

word, what kind of injection system will you be running? some homemade shit or like a tank with a regulator on it. if you have your lights vented from a duct outside the room going to the lights and then the duct from the lights running outside the room i assume u could just run co2 in there and not vent. but if your using a tank with a regulator, you should hook it to a timer and run it like for like 15-30 minutes every hour or two. and if your going that route u need to shut off the fans if your room is vented so u dont just suck out the co2 u paid for. theres a really good video on youtube. its called I Grow Chronic! the guy goes from start to finish hydroponics growing ak-47 and WW. pretty cool vid i suggest a watch.

Venting: New furnace and central air have been installed with uber efficient hardware, so the exhaust vent is only 1.5" id pvc. I don't think this will allow enough air volume to pass. Sewer vent pipe looks like my only option as of now. As for air intake I was thinking of venting internal house climate for now with the option of same but with co2 injection later down the road.
What, did they take the chimney out when they put in the new furnace or just put a cap on it. Man it doesn't get any better than this.

Greets,

That was a pretty damn informative video, answered a few more questions that have been rolling around in my head. The co2 system I'm putting together is a tank and timer setup something similar to what was shown in the vid and try to time sink it together (co2 on, room venting off for a couple of hours). I'm sure mistakes will be made. :) I did get my seeds, AK47 and Butterscotch Hawaiian.

Greets,

Chimney is still there but on the opposite side of the basement. I would have to run about 30' of venting. I was thinking that would be to far to try and vent it.

Greets,

Yea, lucked out on the seeds. I have only one strain of the AK47 but 2 different strains of the BH (G13xBH@50/50) and (G13xBH@75/25). bout 150 seeds of the AK and 125 ea of the BH's. Is there a decent way to store seeds at all? Thanx.

Greets,

Been out searching and putting together my materials for my grow room and ran across these little gems for $8.00usd. FYI @ home depot in the garden clearance center.

Greets,

The material gathering continues. So I have been looking at the different timers and have seen some pretty cheap analog (and questionable timers) as well as some pretty expensive digital (but lacking multiple outputs) ones. Then I got to thinking about using a computer to control an interface that would be more capable of running multiple outputs with a good timer program to back it and does this cheaply....Behold I give you the K74V2.

Do you have an old PC lying around the house which absolutely no one wants? Then you can convert it into a dedicated controller. Communicate with the real world via the parallel printer port on your PC. Simply connect printer cable from your computer to the connector on relay board. There are 8 relays each capable of switching 12VDC/10A or 240VAC/5A. Each relay has an LED to indicate when it is operated. We provide two sets of complete, stand-alone software to control the relays: one works under DOS so you can write your own batch files to control individual relays, the other under Windows 9x/2000/ME/XP.

  • Requires 12VDC Power Supply.
  • Relay has Normally Open and Normally Closed Contacts rated for voltages 12VDC @ 10A, 125VAC @ 10A, or 250VAC @ 5Amps.
  • Dos / Windows Software Download below.
  • L: 8-1/2" W: 2-3/4" H: 1"
"
And the software that comes with this controller is pretty stout for a control application (I will attach some screens of the software running). All of this for $34usd in kit form or $39usd assembled and tested.

damn that sounds complicated. lol im stoned but still, how would you apply this to your grow room?
Greets,

I figure instead of running multiple timers to accomplish control of the grow room, I can use this single interface for all the items that I need controlled saving time, money, and hassle.

Veg lights
Grow lights
CO2 injection
Veg pump
Grow pump
Exhaust fans
Plant fans
