Need advice for ebb and flow set up (with 2 4x4 flood tables)

Whats up. well I am making the switch back to hydro (last time was a DWC failure) This time I am going with ebb and flow.

I currently have
2 600w lights
2 4x4 botanicare flood trays, already plumbed
2 hydrofarm 400gph pumps

80 3"x3" rockwool cubes
50 clones just cut 5 days ago.
lights and all are all setup, and vented on a closed system.

anyway, what would be my best bed as far as highest yeild for what I have. And I was thinking about putting down a bed of hydroton or a grow mat, then setting the rockwool right on top (with covers over the cubes). Would this be advisable, or is there an easier or more effective way of doing it?

And how big of a res should I get for each table? Would a 50 gal rubbermade each suffice?
Thanks in advance.

One more thing. these will be getting no veg time, I am looking for more single cola plants. And should I get some 6" cubes as aposed to the 3"?

if you got the 6 inch cubes i dont think you would be able to fit 50 clones in two 4x4 tables. but if they get no veg time i think pure rockwool as medium would be good.

i would use your flood trays, then get the bottom rockwool cubes/ rectangles . if you fill the system with hydroton you may run into problems with troubled plants. i always find it is important to isolate sick plants especial with mold/mildew weakness. Reaching into the middle of a forests when all the roots are intertwined and removing a plant could cause problems.

what i would recomend:

get some sort standardized container and do a hempy bucket style SOG. in your 4X4 containers ( use hydroton or perilite mix whatever). that ways you keep it simple (seeing as DWC wasent your forte) and if you have a power outage not all is lost to a couple of dry RW cubes.

then you can have 25 plants per tray, easily accessible , arrangeable . and you wont be fucked by power outages!

what do you think?

also what happened to your DWC. that is a relatively simple way of growing. you should seriously look at what when wrong with that grow if you intend to grow hydro again. or else all may be lost before its begun. all the same PH and nutrient problems will persist.

also, as for res. you should assume that two 600 lights will make those plants drink at lease 2-4 gallons a day. so my advice would be do two 50 gallon tubs. and run two different cycles for a harvest every 30 days.

With DWC, I started with individual buckets, which went ok, but it was a PITA dealing with everything 6 times. having to keep 6 buckets cool etc. then I tried using rubbermaid tubs with multiple plants and had constant root rot problems, so I gave up on it.

Thanks, I was thinking around 50 gal each as well.
Do you think those rubbermade roughneck totes would hold up? I hear alot of people use rubbermaids for a res, but thats a lot of water to hold in there....and yes I was planning on running two cycles, harvest one tray a month.

Just for the record

4' = 48"

48 / 6 = 8

8x8 = 64

So not accounting for plumbing etc. You could fit 64 cubes per tray.

I'm assuming you've already read Al b fuct's thread https://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeroponics/6592-get-harvest-every-2-weeks.html ???
yeah I have read that, He has an awesome set up, but here is only running 20 per tray, I was planning on using smaller cuttings (he uses 9" cuttings for bigger plants) and fitting alot more mabye 50 to 60 per tray.

And anyone have any suggestions as far as mabye using a grow mat in the bottom of the tray, and rockwool right on top?
or hydroton on the bottom and rockwool on top?

Well, a lot of different factors come into play! with 80 clones i would be guessing your running some type of indica?? then for sure a nice SOG could work well! 3x3 cubes are rather small, so i wouldnt let them get to big during veg! possibly strain from healthy clone!

Yes deffinatly running and indica, Its Babba Kush (yes babba, dont ask me the difference this is what is was called when I bought it from the club)
And Im not running any veg time at all, as soon as they have decent roots they will be going into flower. Would the 3x3s be enough? Or should I still go with bigger cubes? thanks for all the input, it is much appritiated.

The loose bagged coco piece coir would be lighter than the Hydroton in the bottom of your trays and retain moisture during the non-flood period and allow oxygen to the roots. It also provides a support for the roots to take hold of. The 6" x 6" rockwool cubes would work well set right on top of the coir. General rule of thumb is to allow one square foot per plant; so ideally you should have 32 plants total in the two 4' x 4' tables. That's 16 square feet x 2 = 32 plants. But there are efficient methods to get more plants in that space.

Just some thoughts.

Good luck. Go Green.... Grow Green

Update:
Table one is setup and ready for clones.
after talking with a few different hydro shop guys (i know, this info comes with a grain of salt :-?) I decided to go with 4" rockwool on top of a coco mat. Just waiting on the last of the clones to pop roots (took cuttings in two batches 5 days a part, stupid I know) I am considering letting them veg for 2 or 3 days (another suggestion of pne of the hydro show guys) any ideas?
