U can use hps for whole grow but the plant won't be as healthy and will have bigger node spacing
Mh in veg will give a lot healthier plant and much shorter compact nodes
Mh u can use in flower u will lose yield but have much harder and more resinous buds
IMO I use mh all the way through veg and about 3 weeks into flower this will limit stretch then rest of flower hps

Making the decision to use MH OR HPS durring veg depends on veg time ,if you plan on a short veg of a month or less & light temps allow tight canopy proximity then hps for the entire grow is perfect .
Extended veg times of 4 weeks plus i'd pop in a MH for better foliage development , much depends on the style of grow your doing , case in point is sea of green with short to zero veg time .
In a sog like my style hps is all i need by going straight from well rooted clones directly into.budding , i also grow full plants with 3 to 4 weeks veg time & i find no need to dust off an old MH as long as i keep veg around a month or less with a tight canopy to light ratio & i get no negative results .

I can't offer anything more than my own opinion (no scientific studies), but it's working for me.
I use a mixed spectrum of light at a 3:1 ratio. During veg it's more MH than HPS, flower the other way around. Right now (flower) I have a 32sq ft grow room, 6 plants covered with 2x600W HPS and 1x400W MH (1600w total). Looks promising to me.
First pic was Nov 28th, last 2 are today.

thank you man also I was wondering if gavita lighting has mh also since they have those new double ended hps bulbs I was trying to find out if they made them in mh also

Its best to put them into smaller containers till the roots establish. I go from solo cup, to quart, to 5 gal. I run 2-t5's and a 600 hps in veg. My nodes are always nice and tight. I get stretch on a few strains like Blue dream etc, but I just trim them back to fit my canopy.
