I have a 400 watt hps enclosed ballast system but due to heat issues ive decided im going to buy a cool tube. Can i take off the socket on my reflector and splice the wires then use an extension cord to connect my ballast to the new cool tube. Will this work and if so do you think a cool tube hooked up with a 171 cfm fan and carbon filter stay cool enough in a 31"x31"x5'7" grow tent.

Most cool tubes come with a cord that should plug into the ballast.

Check this before you buy.

As far as the fan I would get a fan that is the same diameter of the cooltube.

Not sure if 171 cfm is enough. though.

remember the temp inside the room the tent is in will pretty much determine how well you can cool the tent.

The colder the room the better cool you can make the tent. You must also exhaust the heat generated by the light outside your room

Hope the advice helps

ok well the problem is the ballast is enclosed with in the reflector. so in order to have a cool tube i think i would need to splice the cool tube wiring and splice the wires going to the socket on my reflector and connect it to my cool tube using an extension cord. I am just assuming this could work because people use extension cords when wiring there cool tube to their ballasts all the time. But its not a ballast that can be plugged into a reflector, its all one unit. sorry i didnt make this very clear in my original post

my ambient room temp is about 80 or so and i dont have many options of venting out of the room im going to try and vent far away from the tent as i can and out of my closet and suck in cool air from the ground in front of the tent
im hoping if my jet fan cant keep the temps down. ill have it running just my cooltube and buy another fan for my intake i dont want to really ebcause ive already spent lots of money on this grow and still need a tent cool tube carbon filter.

I was hoping i could rig it liek this | filter | >>>| FAN | >>> | cooltube | >>>> then exhaust out the ceiling or back of tent. If this doesnt work im going to maybe have to purchase a small ac unit and have my intake be ac air idk yet this heat is killing me i had no problems with my 400 watter at my old place.

Ok being that your ballast is enclosed in the reflector these instructions should help you so that you can wire it to the cool tube

https://www.rollitup.org/do-yourself/164853-how-use-industrial-low-bay.html

I was faced with the same deli ma as you because i used an industrial fixture for my setup

As far as temps if you can get an ac then great. I have to run my central just to keep my temps under control

Now a lot of growers will run there venting different ways

you want to run everything through one system filter cooltube fan etc.

I personally have a fan 235cfm for cooltube. A stanley blower fan to exhaust my grow box, And another fan that inject air in.

I like to keep fans for each part of the box. Oh and don't forget an oscillating fan for the plants to develop stem strength.

That is just my personal preference.

But whatever works for you as long as you get your temps under control.

Anyway hope my advice helps

yes thank you for the help

I'm hoping my temps will be good if i get the cool tube run it with a 232 cfm fan and use my 171 cfm jet fan with carbon scrubber.

Grow rooms up and running

wiring my cool tube to my enclosed ballast was cake and works perfectly
After buying fans, ac, homeade tent, diy bubble setup my grow room is up to my standards. Finally temps are at 79-80 with lamp on.
