Hi everyone. First I'd like to thank everyone who has experience and shares it with those of us who don't. I've done quite a bit of reading so far. One thing I'm having trouble finding is what brand of lights people prefer. There are so many out there, and prices range from $20 clear up to almost $200 or so. I think I will be running a 600w in a 2ft(depth) by 5ft(width) area, the height is 8ft. I've been told the height doesn't matter too much. So my first few questions are, 1.) Would a 400w be sufficient enough for that space?(I will be doing SOG). Or will it be worth my while to run a 600w. I assume the 600w. I've attempted to figure something out on the brands, but it's difficult for a 1st timer. Sunmaster? Eye Horilux? Solarmax? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much for your time and help!

go with the 600 and as for lights shell out on a nice ballast and then use whatever bulbs people will probabily flame me for this but i prefer to have 3 or 4 cheapys liein around to change quickly than worring ill lose my expensive one im a cheapskate tho if you can afford 2 good bulbs then go with the better ones or be fucked when it goes on a sunday when local hydroshop is shut (murphys law)

ok for starters my friend height is prolly the most important thing considering how long u veg. for ur plant/plants will be tall so u gotta make sure u have enough room for ur plants and enough room so ur plants stay far enough away from the light so that they dont get burned or killed secondly are u gonna have just a hps throughout ur whole grow or are u gonna have mh for veg and hps for flower which the ideal lighting for growing but some ppl go with hps for vag and flowering see cuz if u are going to have only a hps for ur entire grow i would go with the 600 but if u are gonna have mh for veg and hps for flower then i would buy the 400w because u can get 400w switchable ballast mh/hps but if u go with the 600w u will need to buy 2 of them since they dont come in switchable ballast thats another choice ya gotta make i hope it dint sound to confusing hope all works out for ya dude gooood luck

Well I picked up a couple 400w MHs, so I'll be using those for veg. I think I'm going to go with a 400w HPS as well. The MH lighting should cast some lighting on the flowering as well(for 12 hours anyway, then veg will be closed to keep light off flowering). I need tips on good hps ballasts. Thanks for your replies in advance!
PPMFemGuy - thanks for the reply. The height of my room is 8ft. I'm going to veg at 12". My HPS will be in a homemade cooltube using a pyrex bake-a-round tube. I don't think I can do the switchable ballast. I'm going to be doing perpetual. So I need a ballast for veg and one for flowering. my exhaust venting will go outside(after being filtered) and my fresh air will be coming from a room kept at 70 degrees fahrenheit. What do you think? I can give more details if you want, maybe you could help me a little more. I have a pretty good idea of what my setup will be.
p.s. strain will be ak-47 and maybe one that I think is called blue rhino. Not sure on the 2nd one though, it's from an old timer I know.

yea dude if u got questions i will help as much as i can but i aint no jorge cervantes or ne thing but im sure i could help first off that a good height of ur room 8ft is what mine is to if u switch to flower when they are 12" tall u should end up with about 3 or 4 ft plants which is nice make sure u grab a few cfls for side lighting i mean depending on ur grow method u might need side lighting to get the side buds but u might not it all depends secondly u better make sure that u filter air from ak-47 especially if its going outside cuz that stuff will stink up ur whole house if ur not carful odor control is a must with that type of strain and last but not least ballasts if ur gonna go 400w u might as well just buy a 400w switchable so u have one fixture and a mh/hps all in one but if u want more then 400w then buy multiple like i said before tho i dont know the specifics of ur set-up so i dunno for sure im just givin ya my best guess but if ya got any other questions i will try to answer them for ya best i can and if i cant i will find someone who can but ne ways be cool dude and hope all works out for ya
I'm going to lst them, doing a sog/scrog. So I'm not sure if I need the CFLs. I'm going to make this carbon filter I found a DIY here..

The air will be filtered through that filter, then let through an attic area, and finally outside. I already have a 400w mh setup, ballast and all. So now I'm going to get a 400w hps setup for flowering. I don't want too many more watts pumping through as I'm trying to keep this very low-key!! even 800w might be too much? but I figure that 400w mh for veg and 400w hps for flower is about what I need for around 6 plants doing a sog/scrog!
