Need some help with filter setup

Ok so I've never grown before and planning on an indoor setup. Im stuck between a 2x2x3 or a 2x2x4 which im leaning more to the 2x2x4. I have decided on Northern lights for my first time and only plan on 1 plant for now maybe 2 in the future once I get the science down. Ok now heres my delima I am not sure on what CFM fan I need to use for a DIY charcoal filter. Also what inlet fan I would need. I basically need a setup that will keep the room from smelling. I figure 2 plants MAX wont take a lot to control the smell compared 2 the big grows people have going.

Ok now as for the lights Im going to run 4-6 CLFs depending on how far along she is at the time ect maybe jump to 8 if I have 2 plants. I was thinking HPS but for starters Im going on a budget. I don't need overkill and I don't want to drop a lot into it just for learning the basics. So basically Im looking for a budget setup. Any and all help/criticism is welcomed trying to learn as much as I can before I actually start to invest so im only buying once.

I would get a 4" filter fan combo. You did not state if it was feet or meters. I assume feet. Which ever, do the math. I think you need the air fully out every five minutes or so but you can google it.

One good plant can stink up a home. IMHO, buy a good filter, don't DIY and end up with an uh oh moment.

Not sure what you mean by an inlet fan. Even for one or two plants, I would not rely solely on a small duct fan if that is what you mean.

Yes it is feet I know I need around 50-60 cfm max if I remember right. My concern is about what cfm does is take to pull air through filter. By inlet I mean fan blowing in fresh air.

Higher the ceiling? The better so def go 2 x 2 x 5 and I would buy 4in fan/filter combo with 20cfm or higher and I also rec using genetics that are heavy Indica to to them short/squat.:peace:

Home Depot has a inline booster fan that's 4" that pushes 40cfm free air. That would be more then plenty and wouldn't over do it. 4 ft is the highest I can go due to its location. Im assuming with 40cfm I wont even need an inline fan to suck in air the pressure from that fan will pull in enough air to keep any smell from leaking out. I will have a small fan inside just to blow a little air onto plant so I can put it close to vent to assist in pulling some air in.

I have a 2x2x5' tent and use a 4" 165 cfm exhaust fan turned all the way down with a speed controller, so a small fan will do. I do not use an additional fan for input. On the cheap you might get away with just using a Ona puck or two. I tried making a homemade filter but did not have good luck with it. I use a refillable filter I got off ebay. Has a screw opening that comes out and you can refill it for the cost of the 2 or 3 pounds of charcoal. I think it is 6x12".

Hmmm I will have to check ebay for that filter. That is why I was going to make my own so I could just change it out instead of buying a new filter everytime

Im curious, what was the name of it? Refillable seems like a far better investment.

I have the 4x12" size and got it from foothill-carbon-filters. I guess there is 4 lbs. of carbon in the filter, anyways it works really well, no smell coming out of the tent and the plants reek when you open the tent. They sell carbon too but it is expensive. I will try to find less expensive carbon but want quality too so may just pay the extra cause theirs is top quality. The pellet carbon is not as good as the granular btw.

I had to bend the flange on the filter outwards or more open to fit over the fan, so fit was not exact. I have the filter outside now sitting on the top of the tent as there was not enough room inside really. I have the fan inside the tent with duct tubing from it going out and up to the filter. Not the best setup as it is less efficient to push air into the filter but it works flawlessly so...

You definitely need the 2x4x5 tent. I'd highly recommend Strawberry Kush for your first grow. 1) Easy, hard to kill 2) No smell even when budding, so you can wait a month or two to get a filter setup. 3) Great high. 4) short and very prodigious
Also, Bubblicious, Blue Mystic, Northern lights are all short plants.
