So I woke up this morning and made the decision that today I would stop smoking cigarettes after 12 years of a senseless addiction.
I haven't had a cigarette in about 13 hours now, and it is starting to get to me.
What are somethings I can do to beat this. I've been working out since I got off work and been trying to find things to do with my hands.

People who have stopped smoking cigarettes, what helped you when you were in the process of quitting?

Things that helped were bitching and snapping at people for no reason, and lots of food. But it wasn't that hard for me to quit for some reason. I thought it was going to be much harder. I guess the desire to quit far outweighed the desire to smoke another cigarette.

The physical reaction and it's pull on you will last about 4-7 days as the nicotine levels drop the desire will also, it's the life time of repeated psychological routine that's the killer...coffee time = smoke time, need a beer better light up etc, etc.

Try and change your routine that would lead you to smoke.

Quitting cigarettes is easy. I've done it a bunch of times.

One thing that helped was going outside and taking a couple deep breaths.

You would probably never hear this here ....but what helped me quit was just simply hitting the bowl or a joint everytime I needed a smoke. A nic fit only last 3-4 minutes ....so just toke up alot for a sec when you get the urge.

Went to a hypnotist and I quit cold turkey. I was smoking 3 packs of Kools everyday.
How'd that hypnotist work? Just curious how they do it. I was thinking about going to the doc for chantix. My pops quit after 40 years and said chantix was the only way for him to be succesful considering his low self control. But I want to quit with out meds if I can.

Damn. How do you even smoke 3 packs a day? You must've constantly had a cigarette lit lol. That would be $15 a day now days. Around here at least. And that's almost $5.5k per year!

I actualy know several people that can do twice that a day

but they buy the generic brands at indian resivations for like 20$ a carton

How about switching to dip for a period to break the psycologal habit , than trying to quit

Smoking pot did help a lot for me.
The self allowance of having that cig at special select times really helped me build a respect for the socialness of what I felt it should be.
I found no desire for any if I could enjoy at least one on the weekend at the bar with my buddies. Social.. just like drinking and smoking pot at times right?
Mind over matter.

Also curious about the hypnotist.
Chantix didn't work for me, made me suicidal.

The money you save is a good sorce of will power...spend it on a new toy as a reward.
Unless you roll your own cigs, then the $$s not a problem and this doesn't help much.

For when I quit those several times (been 7*years since the last time)... yeah, break your routines up. The times that I would get too antsy. I would do some push ups and say outloud why I did not want to smoke. (Hey, it worked to remind me why I was toturing myself.) I'd also smoke weed when all else fails. If you used to smoke after a toke then avoid that routine/craving, I guess. Good luck!

I'm going the other direction lol, picked up cigs again because I had to stop smoking weed for probation. Oddly enough I had no problem at all quitting them last time after 3 years of a pack per day habit. But quitting weed has been hard as hell. Just today made it one week with no ganja after saying I was gonna stop a dozen times. Go figure! This is the type of stuff that makes me think weed is at least habitually/psychologically addictive.

Like Thrice said, mind over matter.

I didn't believe it would work, but I did want to quit and my family was frightened because at the age of 23 I couldn't run up a flight of stairs. So I went.

At first he proved to me I could be hypnotized. He stood behind me and before I knew it was falling backwards into his arms. After that I guess it was pretty typical, dark room with an object to look at, in my case a spinning wheel, except when he said I would relax, I relaxed so well he thought I fell asleep.

Anyway when I walked out I put a fresh pack of cigs on the counter and didn't smoke another one until about 2 years later when my fiancee died in a traffic accident. I lit one up and puked my guts out and haven't had another one since. I did need a redo because of cravings, but that soon passed.

Contrary to most people I lost 10 lbs. I guess because the hypnotist said whenever I wanted a cig I would drink a glass of grapefruit juice. I still do like to drink grapefruit juice.

Now the rest of the story. It has been years since I've smoked but in my dreams from time to time I smoke. When I'm in Las Vegas I long for one but the thought of puking is a real turn off.

I quit keeping count of the money I saved at $3,000. 3k buys a lot of weed.

I smoked when I was on the phone, driving, with coffee, after dinner, after sex for sure, damn I guess just about whenever.
