I am starting my first new grow room and I see in GrowFAQ..be sure not to overload outlets but doesn't explain..how NOT to...I am considering ( at first) of adding a 1000 watt HPS and also some approx 6-8 cfl's and possible a fan or two to one 110v electrical outlet...any suggestions on whether that is safe or not??? Thanks for any help you can offer...

I'm not familiar with American electrical standards, but the math is the same:

amps = watts x volts

So from a standard 13 amp UK wall socket, I can pull a (theoretical max) load of 3120w before I burn my grow-room down. :)

Look in the breaker box or fuse box and find the one that in connected to the outlet you want to use. And its power= volts x current

Thought I answered this ques. already, The easiest way is to find out which circuit breaker(usually a 15amp or 20amp) controls that room(and whatever else for that matter) in the panel box, you need to look at how many amps each of the items draw(add em up), whatever size breaker it is stay AT LEAST 5 to 6 amps under, at least thats what I've always done to be safe, 20amp breaker, make sure your added amps(the items in question) dont exceed 14, IMO circuit breakers are rated to handle 80% of thier load, but remember if something else is on that circuit that adds into more amps being pulled:peace:

Just bought my first light for that matter and it happens to be a 1000 watt hps...bought it off ebay and of course, it came with no owner's manual or information whatsoever...so I don't know how many amps or can count them...all I did was plug in the ballast and WhahLah...bulb comes on!...ha Now I need to know will it work effectively and safely in a garage bathroom standard 110v electrical outlet? I also want to add fans and some cfl's soon to complete the room. Do I still need to go to some box and count stuff I know nothing about>????? Please help and keep simple..thanks..in the meantime, I'm wondering of the garage will catch on fire when I am not here...wanna test run and keep it on 12 hrs...thanks for any whatsoever advice you can offer...

If you plugged it in to an outlet and it worked then there shouldnt be any reason it dosent work in any other outlet in your home, your garage should be independent from any other rooms in the home, I wouldnt be running anything off that one outlet the lights plugged into, maybe a small fan, If the light is installed right and your not getting any kind of crazy high temps in ther you should be fine:peace: if you have all the things you want running throught the garage and the breaker trips you know you have to much on it:peace:
