Spores are legal in the US, it doesn't matter if they are detected.
But in the OP's case, he's in CA and they are illegal, not because they are a "drug", but because they are a foreign species that they want to control, like any other pest that can fuck up their agriculture business.
Spore vendors are above board and will not to ship to CA. Too easy for a sting operation to get them.
But if he finds a buddy willing to mail them to him, sure, they can be sent.
To the "don't grow, buy" guy.
Yes, they can be difficult for some, and very easy for others. It depends on how much effort you are willing to put in. For a 2 post guy to be pushing a buy decision, though, makes me think maybe you have a vested interest in people buying them.

Yes, it is extremely easy to watch a video. do not diminish the efforts of those who grow mushrooms here. One could as easily say "well, it is extremely easy to grow marijuana". And it is, right? just put seeds in the ground and water.
