NEW Herbalaire H2.1 Full Review

Hey all, im HighFlyBy, and im here to give you as much information on this new product I got my hands on the other day.

The item in question is the new Herbalaire h2.1 with new stock pump included (as of 01/01/2010). This item has been out for several years, and in the past has been compared to high end vapo's like the Volcano, despite its $250 price.

Just a little history...In the past I have had a volcano(classic), SSV, a cheap hotbox from ebay, and a Vapir handheld vape. Out of the lot, the volcano was the one that lasted, and it eventually broke after 4 years of amazing service. I have used an herbalaire in the past and was pretty impressed by the efficiency of the device, but I did have two problems with the device.

1. The Stock Pump - Man this thing wasn't my cup of tea on the old herbalaire. It did the job, but filled bags in 3-5 minutes, which frankly was too long for me.

2. Bags - These things are not very big, nor made that well. They seemed to break at the seems after a while, but then again, my storing techniques were poor. bongsmilie

Well, lets get to this new device, and the changes herbalaire ltd have made to it. I noticed this month that they changed the stock pump as of January 2010, so I jumped on this device. At $250, and being compared to the volcano, i just had to buy it and see if it was really worth the cheese, and to see if it had improved over the old one.

Let me say when this thing arrived the box was SMALL! Opening it is quite exciting, despite its incredibly small size, which I quite like. To put it in perspective for you, the entire box this thing came in, with parts and all is about the size of a volcano unit itself ;)

In the box they include the following parts:

1. Herbalaire Unit
2. Teflon mouthpeice and 2 teflon straw attachments for the bags
3. Pump (no fans here guys, just like an aquarium pump)
4. Tubing
5. Whip
6. 5 bags and clamps to make your own
7. Little metal spike, they call it a cleaning tool
8. Crucible (bowl)
9. Instructions

The Results:

Well, hooking it up, everything looks cool, you get to use it as a whip style vape, or a bag fill system. When turning the unit on, you will see a tri-colored LED light that will let you know whats going on with the temperature of your device. Green means the device is heating up, and not at the right temp. Red means the unit has gotten too hot, or is at too high of a heat setting. the light will turn amber when the temperature set is reached, and my temp of choice is 375 degrees. The device heated up in about 2 and a half minutes, and I loaded the crucible(bowl) with about .5 of some herbs. I attached the bag and turned the pump on. The first thing out of my mouth was, This pump is fantastic! Immediately after turning on the pump, thick vapor started filling the bag, at a very impressive rate. about 2 minutes later, the bag was completely full of thick vapor.

Taking off the bag, I noticed the mouthpiece to be quite hot, but I gave it 5 seconds, and put my lips on it, and took a big hit, and it wasn't hot enough to bother me, but I think that is going to depend on the user, because it is quite warm.

The hits off this thing are AMAZING! We ended up filling two bags with the .5 grams of herb, and were blazed enough to take a break for quite a while. After emptying the crucible, we discovered the herbs we stuck in came out quite brown, and no burns on it, which is pretty cool. What I did read in the instructions (found out the hard way first) is that with this device, you DO NOT need to break up your herbs before using this device. My unit spit a little of my grinded bud in the first bag, but when we filled the second bag, it wasn't a problem.

The Devastation:

Well guys, its sad to report that after the unit had been off for an hour since its last use, we turned it on to start vaping again. After about 10 minutes, i noticed the light on the unit was still green, which means it hasn't heated up yet. Well, long story short, My unit broke. I contacted Herblaire immediately, and reached a rep from their company in Canada. After explaining my problem to the gentleman, he asked me some questions and said hes extremely surprised this happened, and couldn't stop apologizing. after some questions, he determined my unit had in fact broken somehow, and ordered me a new unit immediately. The guy from herbalaire said since the new unit started shipping in January, this is the first reported break, which is pretty good considering they sold 20,000 units in January. he felt really bad the unit died on me the first day, but did everything in his power to make me happy, which did keep me satisfied :D

This unit does come with a 3 year warranty, just in case anything like this does happen, and if it does, be rest assured the HerbalAire customer service is AMAZING! A++++++++++

I will have to postpone this review until then, but the good news is I ordered the "high output pump" and tri-bag fill system to add to my review. So the next addition to this will be me testing the stock pump vs high output pump on 1 bag, and 3 bags.

I will also show everyone how to make HUGE bags for less than .99 a bag ;)

Also just wanted to mention, Up to this point, I still believe the herbalaire is one of the best vapes Ive used, despite mine breaking so soon, but I will make a full and final decision once my new one arrives :D

I'm open for comments and requests.

I recieved an email today telling me my replacement unit is already been shipped out, and the provided me with a tracking number.

:blsmoke: Another A++ as far as customer service goes, the turn around was quick....most other companies give you a stupidly long 5-15 business day turn around time.

bongsmilie Keep it up herbalaire

More information and testing of this vaporizer will be coming as soon as the new unit arrives. If you have any questions, comments, or picture requests, sound off with a reply below.

ALRIGHT, well I called herbalaire today to find out if they had any idea where my unit was, because the unit still hasent arrived. He said he would do some investigating and give me a call back, which he did in about 5 minutes. Apparently there was a mix up and candapost had not seen the express request on the package and sent it regular mail, which put my package at my door around march 2nd, or latest march 8th. Anyway, hebrlaire corrected the problem and upgraded the shipping . I really have to say herbalaire stepped up to the plate, and they have RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING customer service.

I should have the unit tomorrow or Monday....new update coming soon....if anyone has any requests for pictures or tests or comparisons they want me to do on this vaporizer unit, let me know now so I can include it in the initial review.

Alright guys, well the unit arrived on Saturday, and DAMN this thing has delayed this review for a few days. :hump: First off, I'm just going to go over the new Items I got, as well mention a few features and info I wanted to mention. I also wanted to mention this review will be a new style of review, a "perpetual" review if you will. I will constantly update it with new pictures and tests if requested. Lets get to business...

Warm Up Time:

The start up time for my HerbalAire unit is under 2.5 minutes, every time. Cool down time is about 4 minutes. Also, the HerbalAire is equipped with an Automatic Shut-off feature. The unit will shutdown and blink green 30 minutes from the last time the dial is adjusted. This is a great feature for the forgetful folk. :eyesmoke::confused:

The New Goodies:

(besides the new unit of course)
1. High Output Pump
2. Tri-Bag Teflon bag piece
3. Extra Bags and screens

The Tests:

Pumps - I was really intrigued by this "high output pump" as I opened it. Its all shiny and metal, a nice piece of eye candy compared to the standard pump. The first thing I did, was compare the standard pump VS the high output pump. I use two different bags, one being the standard bag(ill call h.a. bag) they include with the vaporizer. The other bag I made out of Reynolds Oven Turkey Bags. the following tests are a comparison between the two pumps, and how quick they fill single bags, and and second test using the tri-bag setup.

Results:

Standard Pump - 1:28 (H.A. Bag)
3:26 (Oven Bag)

High Output Pump - 0:30(H.A. Bag) WOW!
1:30(Oven Bag)

So, the high output pump has cut the times down a lot. Just for those who are disappointed about the extra cost of the high output pump, please keep in mind, the standard pump now included with herbalaires are 3X faster than before.

To be honest, at 3.5 minutes for the big bag, its really fantastic. I get around 8-12 big rips from the oven bag, compared to 2-5 with the herbalaire bags. It all depends on how big a rip you take ;) So even with the small bags, a minute and half fill up time is great.

Tri-Bag System:

I was a little skeptical of this at first, but I was definatly interested, and thought it would be put this vaporizer into the category of "party vapes". Im only going to include the times of the tri bag system using the H.A. bags, unless someone really wants to know how long it will take for the turkey bags ;)

Standard Pump - 4:54 SWEET JESUS it took a long time. But you know, come to think of it, I probably would be entertained for 5 minutes since I am partying ;)

High Output Pump - Well, this is mind blowing. This pump filled all 3 bags in 59 SECONDS. Thats right. 00:59. Wow, what an improvement, this pump is simply awesome, and definatly worth every penny.

The skinny - For single bag use, the standard pump is best, it provides the thickest, best vapor possible. When using the tri-bag setup, aka party mode, the high output pump is the only way to go.

The Whip:

This is going to be my shortest chapter. This is a cool function, and in past reviews, I read how people preferred the whip over the bag, and im going to have to disagree. I can see me hardly ever using the whip function. I just don't have a problem waiting a few minutes for a bag to fill up ;)

Useful info:

The warranty is 3years. Now that's on EVERYTHING on the vape, not just the heating element, like on the V-tower extreme.

Also, after speaking with Herbalaire, they told me anyone can order this unit from them, anywhere in the world, and they will ship it to them for FREE. Thats right, everyone in the WORLD gets this unit for $249 hipped to your door. Not trying to sound like a salesman, but that's a damn good deal ;)

The Outcome:

This is one of the best vaporizers I have ever used. The efficiency of this unit is mind blowing. I would suggest this unit to anyone I know. For its $250 price tag, it is simply the best thing you can get if your looking for a quality vaporizer. I give this unit a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Like I said before, this is a Perpetual review, meaning I will constantly update it, and test out new things with the vape, and do any other tests people would like tried out. (Such as hash vaping, nug vs grinded herb, and much more)

If there is anything you would like to see tried out, or any other pictures of the unit you would like, please comment and let me know.

Remember to throw some rep my way, and please comment below if you found this review helpful. :blsmoke:

This is Dope HighFlyBy!

One day my friend decided to bring his friends vape, the 'Vapour Daddy' it's basicly just an element heating up using electricity, element covered in glass and a hollow glass cylindyer you can put about .4 Grams max and it takes a while before the vapour comes in consistent through the tube, nontheless i got quite high off marijuana vapour and it was a fantastic different High and taste. the Herbalaire sounds way bomber with the bag system... vapour daddy is 200$ herbalaire 250$ ....Go figure... Nice Find there Brother + rep :eyesmoke:

Good update to the review HFB.

Agree with above however.. If that's how you're filling your bags then your not optimizing your effeciency, in so much as you won't absorb all of the cannabinoids from that vapour as it is so "thick" and it will be wasted similar to smoking it. Run it through cooler and do twice as many bags.. It may take longer, but it will make your bud go longer, the vapour less harsh, and give you a much fresher flavour. If that was just an abnormal bag then no worries lol

Since you've mentioned it there is one thing ....

The Volcano uses a compression chamber between the pump and the heating column, to smooth out the putt-putt-putt of an air pump. Does the Herbalaire have a sputtering from the air pump? If so could you hook up some type of simple chamber between the two to see if the compression chamber makes a difference in vaporizing. Please.

I've wondered that about the Volcano, if it makes a difference in vaporizing or just for aesthetics of the vapor filling the bag. I would think it helps with vaporizing or the Volcano people wouldn't go to the expense of adding one.

If you could run that experiment that would be fantastic. Have you tried Volcano bags instead of the one's you're using?

Hey guys, thanks alot for the comments first off!

Just wanted to agree with you guys completely and update this a little bit. Im going to include some pictures within the next few hours (as i vape) of the correct temperature, and how to maximize your herbs.

I have found that instead of starting it around 375, if you start off around 350-360 for the first bag, the taste is mouth watering! Im talking Gushers here guys, the flavor is amazing. Just like knickers said, your going to want to start on the lower temps, to maximize your herbs. Those few bags WERE abnormal my friend, and done just to see how milky i couldget them ;) Just as you guys stated, it is a little bit harsher, but you do get pretty lit ;)

For the second, and even 3rd bag can be vaped at a higher temp, 365-380 to get the higher temp vapor. I usually get about 3 bags off a tiny around of bud, again, Ill include pictures of what im talking about later. If you fill the crucible(which I dont always) then you can get 5 bags or more....just depends on your usage.

Funny you mention that. I had the thought myself, and before I could even suggest it, I received this email from herbalaire.

Dear (my name)

Yesterday we tested a valve on the high output pump and were able to have full control on the air flow, from zero to max in about a half a turn.

We have ordered a few thousand and they should be here in a couple of weeks. We will be sending one of these to every individual that owns a high output pump at no charge - obvioulsy that includes you.

So....Im about 90% sure this is what your talking about. I think what your trying to figure out is whether the sputtering air stream gives you a more consistant vape over a straight stream of air? From what Bohdan from herbalaire tells me, this valve will let you control the airflow going into the unit, which may help the stutter, but i wont know until I get it. I may try and rig up a tube running to a little "compression chamber" if you will, and then let it push itself into the unit, but in my opinion, this is going to do nothing but take longer, and provide me with the same quality vapor, or worse. I'll give it a shot anyway, now im interested ;)

I will be sure to include a picture of this new valve the second it arrives....so if anyone else has any requests, now is the time if you want them included in today's update ;)

Cheers guys bongsmilie

"Compression Chamber" is a weird name, I think I made it up though I might have remembered it from the Volcano site. It's just an empty cylinder where pressurized air from the putt-putt-putt pump collects and goes out the other end of the chamber in a smooth stream. Like a large one way valve with nothing inside.

.

What, if any, difference a smooth air stream vs putt-putt-putt makes for vaporization I would very much like to know.

I discussed this with highflyby earlier and he's almost convinced me that it doesn't make a big difference.

but that contraption like that in your picture is almost /exactly/ what I imagined to do such a thing.

See, looking at this picture just makes me question it more. If anything, I feel your only option would be to use the high output pump, and even then, I fee like all your going to do is bake your herbs. This attachment looks like it will just create a slower steady stream, which frankly wont do anything more than the pump does now...if anything its gonna make it worse ;)

Like I said, You may bake your herbs rather than pull the vapor from them. This unit is designed to operate without breaking up your herbs, and I think adding a "compression chamber" of any sorts will just make it less efficient....more or less....it will make it a volcano.

The great thing about this vape, is it does what high end vapos do like the cano, but provide you with efficiency that you have never seen before. Regardless, If you know where I can pick up something like that, I will be more than happy to pick it up, otherwise, gimme a bit to make something up like that ;)

Pictures within the next few minutes....Im gonna show a picture of some spent herbs as well, for the user who asked ;)

edit: I found exactly what your talking about...here http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3669+10109&pcatid=10109

But...i know its only $2, but I dont see this thing working at all, so let me mull it over for a day or two, ill probably end up getting it anyway. The air that gets compressed in the top part gets shoved through the little hole, making it a steady stream, which is good yes? But then if you notice, the hole that the air is coming out of goes right out the bottom of the glass, which is bigger than that hole, and your tube goes over than, which means its even bigger. The air stream is just going to be weak, and have poor efficiency. BUT that is the purpose of this gig, so well try it out ;)

fucking LEGIT!
Yeah man, this is defiantly the best vaporizer over all i have ever used. I care HIGHLY about efficiency, and is one of the main reason for owning a vaporizer. It may not have a remote for your lazy ass to start it up with(which, by the way, while your attaching your bag, you cant just turn it on, you really need a remote? Lazy fuck.), and it may not have some stupid LCD screen to tell you your EXACT temperature.

But none of that is needed to provide the quality and quantity of vapor that I get out of herbs.

this thing is simply awesome. :bigjoint:

Alright, well Ive got an answer for you.

The pulsating action of the pump combined with the design of the chamber and the 18 hole configuration is one of the main reasons for the efficiency of the herbalAire. To understand this better, imagine what is going on at the microscopic level. First of all, the pulsating action of the pump could be considered as pressure shock waves traveling through the herb at 60 cycles per second. Pressure increases and decreases 60 times every second. On the up pulse the pressure increases and forces air into all the herbal crevices and on the down pulse the hot air (permeated with essence) is released from the herb. Imagine a pneumatic jack hammer with a compression chamber to smooth out the hammering - not much concrete would be released. The Volcano has a compression chamber to smooth out the "putt putt", but I think its a mistake on their part, mostly because their chamber design is not designed to capitalize on the jack hammering effect of pump.

This is rather a simplistic explanation, but right on the money.

Also im going to include this video, showing the efficiency of the herbalaire. Note, in this video, he DOES NOT use the crucible. You do not need to use your crucible in this unit, you just have to keep your chamber clean. In the video, the pipe tobacco is crammed right against the jets, which is ok. Amazingly, upon talking with the guys from herbalaire, there has never been a report of any jet ever clogging up, even after many years of use.

Thanks HFB, great explanation. I knew nothing of the 18 holes nor the pulses, it makes sense.

.

On another note, I vape my Volcano at 205C, 1/3 teaspoon of ground bud per bowl. I don't like to run a bowl twice because it stinks up the bag. Every week I get enough dregs to do a butane honey oil extraction - about a cup, 28 grams; fits a Honey Bee extractor or a 30" x 1/2" ID copper plumbing pipe. I get enough honey oil from one extraction to make a tray of knock out brownies, my friends have to cut them in half (18 pieces per tray) and still are near comatose for 4 hours.

Have you tried some type of extraction with your dregs? If so, how and what quantity and how potent?

Thanks again.

I'm more for filling the chamber half way or so, and doing a good 15 total feet of volcano bag (currently around 3x5ft full bags before i go fresh). I used to do similar to above and just use a little bud and run it through once, maybe twice, but I often find I can't be bothered emptying and fillig constantly, especialy as I'm currently usually vaping with 2-3 others.

I usually hold onto my dregs for when times get dry, however iso or butane extraction is logically the most effecient way to finish them off... Besides grinding them to shit and cranking the temp to full lol.
