Hello everyone. So excited to be here. Love to sit back here roll a fatty and overwhelm my mind with knowledge .
I am starting to get all my goodies together to attempt my first grow. I am a cabinet maker by trade so I put together a 24"w x 20"d x 36" box. Made a door for her placed some hinges on her. Some weather stripping along the edge for a tight seal. Siliconed all the edges where the boards meet.
I decided to do a DWC working outta a 5 gallon bucket. Decided to go this route from all the reading I have done here.
Also I wanna try cfl, with maybe a max of 2 to 4 plants. Using bag seed.
I am mostly excited about all the science behind plant growth.
The lights, nutrients, life cycles. What color spectrums plants use etc etc.
Any and all help is appreciated as I am completely new to this and hope to one day be that guy you talk about that grows some killer bud.......
Thanks

Growind...
No not yet. Plans are to put an intake fan and place it at bottom right corner inside, and an exhaust fan top right hand corner inside. I hav3 not cut any whole of yet waiting to see the fans i am getting first. I am assuming pc fans should keep the air circulating in the box. Line the inside of the box with mylar...unless you guys think the white will work..
I am gonna build a home made set up of cfl light to fit inside the box. I want it so i can bring it up and down on some wires or small chain.
I have included better pics.
Please tell me what you guys would do to this box. Doesnt seem big but its actually pretty roomy inside.

That's a sweet little cab! Keep it white inside, and keep it simple!!! Don't go crazy, 1st grow, lots to experience and learn. Good luck!

Sweet box. Id like to have one of those. Id do 2 plants. You dont want over croud the cab. Diverse reasons. Cleanliness, air-flow, heat moderation, comfortable management you know. Id go 6500k 6400k 5500k, 23w 26w 32w 45w bulbs spiral. Just some ideas to shift around. DWC no more than 2 plants their going to go bannas on growth. Welcome bro. Happy first grow. Keep a keen eye on your every grow touch.:peace::D

Im using CFL's now for my first grow, i dont like 15 40 watters though, if i were you id just buy horticulture bulbs, the big 125w or 250w, you will need a bigger mogul socket though, e39 i think, it wont fit household sockets. Also, why use bag seed? If you got the money buy seeds.

Can you learn from someone elses mistakes? It's going to sound like I am being a dick, but I'm not. I've made all of the mistakes and spent all of the money on things I'll never use again. I 'd like to see you succeed so I'll tel you what I think. Take it or leave it.

The main issue is that Height will likely be a limiting factor for you. I ran into this very same problem and I think a lot of growers do too in the beginning. 5 gallon pot, plus a 2-3 foot plant = 4 ft not including room for lights and ventilation.
Heat will also be a problem. Small space + low height = big heat. There is no where for it to go. You are make a Betty Crocker Easy Bake Oven. A few computer fans won't cool very much light. CFL's are way hotter than people imagine.

My suggestion is to make a similar box, but make it 6ft tall.. This will allow the heat to rise before it is extracted and it will allow plenty of room for exhaust, carbon filter, lights, hood or reflector and clearance between plant and lights.

This box however would make an excellent veg chamber for future use so hold onto it.

Her is my first setup (Below). After a few weeksof veg I knew I had miscalculated and then built a much larger tent. This box below is 2 x 1 x 3ft tall. Those are 3 gallon pots. See how I couldn't possibly fit even this small 5 week old autoflower in there (below)? It just doesn't work out.

Also as Dad said. You need odor control. You will need a 4 inch vortex fan and carbon filter and fan speed controller.. I really don't see any way around it unless you live in the woods and really enjoy the smell of weed. Weed really smells and it's stressful when your house starts to smell like a pack of angry skunks just moved in.

Here is my suggestion for a 1 plant first time grow. This setup will allow you to grow quality bud for years even if you never upgrade.

  • Northern Lights x Big Bud Autoflower (Since it's your first grow I suggest this strain. It is really easy to grow. Plant it and forget about it. In 8 weeks harvest your bud and have a party.) The problem with bag seed is you don't know the characteristics. It may be seed from a 15 ft monster strain that is difficult to grow or is too sativa or indica for your liking etc..
  • 3-5 gallon pot. Any pot will do as long as it has proper drainage.
  • Any quality nutrients. Fox Farms, Advanced Nutes etc.. ( All you need is the bloom nutes. Nothing else is required. Veg nutes are not necessary for an auto in quality soil. It will be flowering in 3 weeks)
  • Fox Farms Ocean Forest Soil or any other recommended soil for MJ.
  • 2x2x6 ft cab
  • 4 inch hole in bottom of cab for air intake.
  • 150 w Sun Systems HPS all in one lamp. (You can get these for less than you can build some crazy cfl setup for)
  • Timer
  • 4 inch vortex fan and carbon filter. A fan Speed controller is nice to have to cut down on fan noise.
  • Filtered tap water or rain water if you can get it.
  • 18 hours of light. Six dark.
You do not need any special elixirs that promise to grow bigger buds. You do not really need a ph pen since the soil should buffer the PH and your nutes will likely lower your water PH to a decent range.. You do not a MH or CFL or fluorecent lights for veg, The HPS is fine.
A small microscope is required so you can see your trichomes. Keep an eye out for bugs.

I hope this helps and saves you some buccos and lost time. Best of luck. Please keep us posted.

Whats a good seed bank. I couldnt get a good feel on the seedbank forums.
I think marijuana-seeds.nl is a good value for new growers. Their value packs and "buy 1 get 1" deals give you a lot of seeds for not a lot of money. Less stress learning to germinate, making a few mistakes, etc.

Done ,Done , and done.
I'm no dummy. Advise and knowledge is why I am here.If your telling me this is the way tp go then its the way to go. Until I am experienced enough to do other wise.
Cabinet is gonna stay the same dimensions except 6ft tall. Everything you are saying is making sense. I will look into the light you are recomending . I had my mind set on the cfl. But if you think otherwise I will look into it.
Northern lights.... I was only using the bag seed because its what I have. But if I am gonna put the effort in growing I might as well keep what ever variables I can control ...under control.
You expressed growing in soil again I had my mind set on a DWC.
Do you think it would be to diffucult for a begginer.
And what bugs. I read alot about spider mites. How would they just show up on my plant. Is that a concern if your getting a clone or a plant as appose to growing from seed?
Thanks guys love the info.
I am hitting htg tommorow.
Lets get my list started budget is about 200. I am gonna make a new cabinet so that i will already have.
The cabinet is made of melamine. Wipes off easily and easy to clean.
Again you guys are awesome
Thanks

Awesome!
Agreed Herbies is the place to go for seed. NL x Big Bud or Royal Queen Seeds NL are good choices in my experience.

You'll know that you have bugs when your leaves start turning yellow, falling off with big holes in them :) It's quite scary, but the people here will get you through it. The bugs sometimes come free with the soil. It's a little bonus :) Leave the bag of soil in your trunk for three days and park in the sun. or put it in a bin and close the lid. This will cook the bug eggs.

Yea, I spent a ton of time and money on a CFL setup. $20 for the vanity light, wood, paint, wire nuts, tin snips $12, vent pipe for reflector $5, v splitters $6 and 8 bulbs $20 heavy chord $10 etc..... Instead I could have bought the sunsystems used at my hydro store with a new bulb for $60 :) It gets better penetration than CFL I believe.

Just remember that you will want to keep your grow low because the 150w HPS doesn't penetrate like a 1000w. You want a nice even canopy. LST her, Super Crop, Fim/Trim etc.. If you choose an auto strain just pop the seed and don't mess with her too much. It'll grow just fine.

I vote to forget about any computer fans. Home Depot has awesome fans for $10. Much stronger and no need to rip apart the chord to your nose hair trimmer to wire it :)

So doing my research. Checked out northern lights from sensi seeds. They have quite a few types what am i looking for exactly.
Started looking at lights found quite a few brands and prices.
I saw 150w hps lights .
Floralux, htg has 1 i believe.
When chosen are there specifics I should consider.
And with regards to value. You say that you would spend the same amount of money on a hps light and making a cfl.
That may be right but wont I be able to produce more wattage for a cheaper price with cfl.
thanks in advance
